How? There are enough writers/authors out there with quality works competing for their works to be published. Those who up front refuse to put forth some (if not any) effort to participate in marketing and have their work passed on by publishers--they will not be missed. Even if they wrote the next greatest thing...but it wasn't picked up...who would care?--simply because nobody knew. But I believe that there are plenty of awesome works that don't get accepted by publishers simply because there aren't enough publishing slots available to accomodate them all. And that would make, what I believe to be a weak argument of something being missed because a writer refused to participate in helping the novel get recognition and sell, as hurting the industry. Is it impossible to get published if one doesn't want to assist with marketing? No, it's not. If one does manage, however, it greatly reduces the chances of a work catching on, selling, making a profit, and the writer ever getting a contract for a second work. The world's not perfect. It's just the way it is.
