Merchants of Doubt: Stress, heart disease, and your friendly tobacco company

Discussion in 'Debate Room' started by GingerCoffee, Jul 8, 2014.

NPR today: The Secret History Behind The Science Of Stress
A win win, throw people off the trail of the connection between heart disease and tobacco, and sell cigarettes as a means of reducing stress.

Here's something older, it isn't a new revelation that the tobacco companies have been selling scientific doubt for decades.

Tobacco Industry Efforts Undermining Evidence Linking Secondhand Smoke With Cardiovascular Disease

What's interesting is a review of the research connecting stress to heart disease it's hard to find any with positive results that were not funded by tobacco companies.

Perhaps stress, the type A personality and heart disease will go the way of tonsillectomies for strep throat and antacids for stomach ulcers. Wonder what other bad medicine might need to be weeded out of the archives?

For those of you not familiar with those examples, tonsillectomies are rarely done now because when the practice was actually studied they turned out to have little impact on sore throat frequency or severity. And until h-pylori was discovered it was believed stress and stomach acid was the main cause of ulcers. Now we have research that shows instead a pathogen was the cause all along.

Why the debate sub-forum you ask? Because the main point is also that some corporations (in particular tobacco but also the oil companies) are producing/selling scientific doubt as a means of countering legitimate evidence that threatens their bottom line.
