    Mrs. John Smith III

Discussion in 'Word Mechanics' started by Iain Aschendale, May 21, 2019.

A question that came up the other day that I can't seem to find the search terms for. John Smith (for example) is the third John Smith in a row in his family. His grandfather was simply John Smith, his father was either John Smith Jr or John Smith II (the second), so he's John Smith III. He marries Cathy Jones, who becomes Cathy Smith.

    No suffix, right?

In a more formal setting, she's Mrs. Cathy Smith (no suffix, right?)

However, in the old style where a woman's identity is completely subsumed into her husband's, is she:

    Mrs. John Smith

    -or-

Mrs. John Smith III? (which kind of makes it sound like she's his third wife to me)
