Aliens right now. I like watching this film, especially if it’s been a while since I last saw it, because I like to see if the arse’ole Marines get killed in the order I’m hoping for.
Going to give Prometheus another go. When I first watched in, shortly after its release on DVD, I went with the crowd and hated it. Maybe I’ll see it differently now.
Maybe, unless you care about characters with some intelligence, motivation and depth and a story that makes some kind of sense.
It's really mediocre. So many more things they could have done with it. Lots of good actors in shitty roles, too, which compounds the disappointment.
I'm looking forward to Dune and The Last Duel this fall. The trailers look pretty good for both films. Fingers crossed.
Yep. I checked a while back, hoping I was wrong, but it was actually worse than I remembered. There are definitely parts I liked, but the characters are so stupid it's unbelievable. They're supposed to be tops in their fields, but they act like rowdy and selfish and exceptionally stupid kindergartners, fighting over nothing and making incredibly stupid mistakes every few minutes. The one guy sees an unknown alien life form and acts like it's somebody's house cat, cooing at it and trying to pet it. That said though, I do enjoy watching it sometimes for certain parts.
Someone posted the poster for Dune somewhere - so disappointing. It’s the typical floating heads bollocks. Generic and cliched.
a lot of theatrical posters aren't that great. I just bought a copy of the theatrical poster for Pulp Fiction. That one is iconic. I have it rolled up, need to get it framed or something.
I'm sad to see The Green Knight getting such bad reviews. I'd still like to check it out. I'm hoping Dune lives up to the hype.
Saw Shang Chi today in theaters. Generally, Marvel movies are always lacking a bit of something or trying to hard to press their comedy, but I felt this one really left that behind. It actually felt like Marvel is growing up a little. There was quite the host of Chinese and Cantonese actors and actresses who really stepped up to the plate. Tony Leung, classically a good actor as he is, presents probably one of the most convincing villains in Marvel. I'm even hesitant to call him a villain at all, which is always a good sign. Even Awkwafina's goofy ass didn't drown the movie in stupid humor. She was reserved to a few goofy things in mostly the right place, not causing the awful tonal shifts Marvel constantly riddles their movies with. And whoever did the music is genius. The mixing of traditional Chinese with modern was seamless and often matched the scene beat for beat. I was more than pleasantly surprised.
The Green Knight would be a difficult one to connect with a broader audience. I’m still looking forward to seeing it if only to reminisce about my uni days!
Watched a couple flicks over the weekend. Nothing groundbreaking, but certainly helped pass the time that should have been spent on writing! Vacation Friends was everything it promised to be, which wasn’t much! The cheap laughs hit their marks most of the time and the movie was short enough not to get annoying. Probably the best John Cena movie I’ve seen. Don’t Breathe 2 was a major disappointment! Really enjoyed the first one, but the second was so rushed and far fetched that I was exasperated before the second half, which was so ridiculous it should have been a comedy! Somebody was definitely looking to cash in on the unexpected success of the first film, and shame on them if they get the financing to make a third.
I saw Yesterday a week or so ago on Netflix. It lived up to the previews, very few surprises, nice lightweight bit of afternoon popcorn. Spoiler Basically it's a timeline slip film where an amateur musician who's got decent skills but no special noteworthy talent gets caught in a kind of dimensional rift and enters our timeline. He soon finds out that there was some sort of popular 60s boy band (kind of guessing here from the song tidbits, sounds boy bandesque) that doesn't exist in the real world. So he does his best, remembers the lyrics and the music as best as he can, and becomes an overnight massive rock star. Interesting concept, and I think the songwriters did a pretty good job (shamelessly ripping off real-life superstars like Klaatu and Olivia Tremor Control) of creating plausible "hit music" from past decades. One thing I didn't expect was to learn what Ed Shearan looks like. Still don't know what his music sounds like, but whatever.
Related to Iain's spoiler Spoiler Similar to something from the British TV series Goodnight, Sweetheart. The protagonist gets time-shifted from the present day to London during WW2 ...and he sings Beatles' songs at the pub's piano and pretends to have written them himself. He becomes quite popular. Sounds like Yesterday took this idea a few steps further.
The implication being that the Beatles’ success was due solely to the quality of their music, and not rooted in a broader cultural context and a specific time that uniquely favored them. Not sure I buy it, but of course the movie doesn’t intend to go that deep.
I mean, we are still talking about the beatles today and I find that their music still holds up even now. I would normally agree that cultural context is important for music, but Beatles do seem relatively timeless on a lot of their hits.
