    Need help deciding!!

Discussion in 'Fantasy' started by AdamReade, Jan 19, 2018.

    Hi guys,
I’ve been thinking about writing a story for a while now and I’ve come up with a couple of ideas on genre however I cannot decide between them. I would massively appreciate any opinions.

Idea 1 - Not very original but a medieval fantasy world, similar to Lord of the rings or Gam of thrones. Would involve creating a world, set of gods etc.

Idea 2 - Sci fi fantasy set on a random planet. Would involve using technology similar to Star Wars but would be set on one planet and not quite as advanced

Idea 3 - Zombie-style apocalypse, everyone over the age of 18 spontaneously turns into a zombie like abomination and follows a school of children through the outbreak etc.

Any advice at all would be really helpful.
    Thanks in advance!

I can't tell until I have an idea as to the story. Only 3 has a partial story; the others have none.

    Yeah.

The progenitors founded an advanced society that has slowly been decaying for hundreds of years. Rebels seek to restore the lost technology by contacting other worlds in the republic. Little do they know, they were left here to quarantine them because the first ships to arrive had the zombie plague - a horror so terrible that the planet was blockaded. Rebels find a ship and break on board to use the communication system, releasing the zombie plague. Everyone over eighteen, turns. Now some school children will have to escape the cities and travel across wild lands filled with indigenous life and sentient species and find the other progenitor ship to get help.

I'd read the heck out of that.

Ideas 1 and 2 aren't actually plot concepts, just... very vague genre descriptions. Idea 3 has a concept but it seems like a blatant excuse to have a YA story about YA characters fighting back against evil adults who just want to exploit them for their own purposes, like nearly every other YA book. :p

These are the things you have to decide for yourself if you're going to be a writer. No idea is inherently better than another.

Yeah, but I have to admit that "everyone over the age of 18 turns into a zombie" is a low-key genius idea for a children's/YA novel.

It's been done (but I think it was 16 instead of 18). I can't remember the name of the book right now, but I remember seeing it in the YA section of my library and reading the first couple chapters just to see what it was about.

    Found the link: https://www.amazon.com/dp/1484721462/?tag=writingfor07a-20

ETA: Not that the OP couldn't pull it off as well, however.

That - also they are way too vague its like asking shall i write a romance or shall I write a thriller ... I dunno, Blue, what do you want to write ?

Incidentally three ideas is nothing - I have about 30 (and growing) in my ideas file .... currently I've written or am writing three of them . The question isnt which of these shall I write ? it's which do I write next ?
