Ha! Is that cool or what? Thank you @Ex Leper for telling me about your success getting your short story from the contest entered. So much for boring, poorly written stories. It would appear such opinions are far from unanimous.
You got your story published?! Cool. I'm a little confused by what you said though, so this ExLeper person told you about their success getting published and it inspired you?
Yeah, this @Ex Leper person is one of our members. His short story from the contest was published. He told me that coming in second inspired him and he submitted his story, Whispering Lee, for publication in a horror magazine and they accepted it. It inspired me to submit Stone Games to the same publication and they accepted it! Some members of the forum posted their opinions that the themes in the short story contest encouraged forced writing that ended up being uninspiring and poorly written. That's fine, everyone is welcome to their own opinions. I'm happy to post evidence to the contrary.
It would be fun to get a copy of the publication. Do you know when your story/stories will appear yet?
Congratulations. I've had a second story accepted by Sanitarium Magazine. We're in the same issue. You can get a ecopy from Apple News Stand, Google Play Store, Pocketmags.com, or the paperback from amazon.
Well done to you both. I don't normally read horror but maybe I'll try the next issue, just incase my appreciation has changed with age. Do you want to give us a nudge when issue 47 is out?
Yay! This shows the value and "purpose" of the contests. Let's hope they continue Congratulations, @GingerCoffee and ex leper. Perhaps more of us should submit our entries for publication (winners or not). Being published elsewhere is not always the barrier people say it is.
No release date yet, but it's usually some point in the first week of the month. Issue 45 is out though. That's the one with Whispering Lee in. Nudge, nudge.
The OP does say issue 47, so that's the one to watch for. Hopefully, we'll get a serious nudge on here when it's released.
Yep, issue 47, the next issue, and @Ex Leper's Whispering Lee is in issue 45. It's a monthly publication. I was unaware of the magazine market for short stories. We've talked about publishing short stories in the ebook market and anthologies of short stories. Then in a PM conversation @Ex Leper told me about his short story experience and I thought, why not? It was good experience submitting it even if they had turned it down. My passion is my novel and it's YA sci-fi, not horror. But I wrote a few pieces for the short story contest on a lark and one of them was that weird story, Stone Games. It hadn't dawned on me to submit it to a magazine, though I was considering submitting my bear story to one a while back. I'm going to have to look into that more seriously now. They only pay a token fee, but hey, they pay, and I can say I'm published! Someone actually paid for something I've written. Thank you guys for all your congrats!
Congratulations ! Really happy for you both. Just one question, can we submit stories for publication after we post it on this forum ?
FAQ: Discussion thread: Does posting work here harm our chances of being published? I told the magazine the story had won a short story contest. They didn't ask any more about that.
Short story markets tend to be a bit more understanding about reprints, but there are definitely publications that still want first rights. So for those places, posting a story here could very well make it ineligible.
Yes and there are in between ones, who don't mind if it was posted in a password protected place with a small audience (like the workshop) but would mind if it was searchable (like our short story contests). You just have to check each place's guidelines.
