Anyone else here need a good ambient jam to really get in the mood for particular settings? I really enjoy lo-fi playlists when writing urban environments and Celtic or folk music for wilder environments like wide plains or mountainscapes. Anyone else use music to help stimulate their creative language for environments? What styles of music or playlists would you suggest? Figured a post like this could help a lot of people struggling with inspiration for new settings. Happy writing, all!
Without the shit I listen to I couldn't write violent or torture scenes. I like Erik Satie's Gymnopedies for general writing. It's actually the only music I can really write to other than Pornosonic and lo-fi.
Whoah those are some genres I never even heard of. Sounds extreme, and definitely planning on broadening my horizons later!
Well, Pornosonic is an album and lo-fi is a chill genre. None of what I listened is particularly extreme.
Ah, I gotcha now. I actually listen to lo-fi often while writing. I wasn't sure if pornosonic was one of those truly out there genres like slimepunk, that you only ever hear about in the back alleys of the internet.
It does sound like a genre. To add, there is a genre called pornogrind which is beyond fucked up. The vocals in that genre sounds like someone trying to flush a clogged toilet.
I listen to bebop when writing most stuff (usually hard bop like Charles Mingus or John Coltrane.) It's bombastic and frenetic, and it distracts my floating attention, allowing me to focus on the writing. Loud, distracting noises helping you focus is kind of an ADD thing. I do switch it up for some settings and scenes though. The bloody, urban cyber-horror book I work on every once in a while works best with 90's industrial and trip-hop, for instance.
I'm a music addict to my writing. Listen to some variety of genres, each fitting a specific plotline or part of my project. Ranging between classic & some rock/metal.
Don't know if any of you are Final Fantasy fans, but I recently bought and binged the Final Fantasy 7 Remake. Now I just listen to the soundtrack on loop while I write. There are so many atmospheric melodies and outright DRIVES in the boss department. Outstanding game for anyone who digs a deep story and killer music.
