    Writing Software Alternatives

Discussion in 'Writing Software and Hardware' started by JohnathanRS, Dec 30, 2010.

Hey, I am basically looking for software similiar to word but is talored to fictional writers. Basically something that has more advanced grammar and spelling checkers, but is a stand alone program.

Disable Word's grammar checker. Use spellcheck though. Grammar is best left to real people.

I have to say that I agree with this. There are a lot of times that I'll type something that's grammatically correct, yet Word will suggest that I fix it.
I'd guess you're getting a lot of "fragment" bull, aren't you?

word is all you need... it's the program best suited to writers... and you should not be relying on grammar/spelling checkers anyway, if you want to be a professional writer...

In the event you don't want to go out and buy Word, there is a free program called Open Office. For being free, it is pretty good. Plus you can open Word docs in Open Office or save a document as a Word doc. :)

Liquid Story Binder has a free 30-day trial. I like that one.

I use openoffice for my writing. Spellcheck, formatting, and save as pdfare all that I need. The .doc and .docs exports are God enough for what we do. Not like we are typesetting or anything.

I downloaded the trial for Scrivener not long ago, didn't really like it, but people claim it's the best out there. You can divide your scenes, chapters, all that stuff. But honestly, I feel more at home with Pages (Mac version of Word), so I would suggest sticking to that.
You should look up Scrivener on Youtube, though, maybe you'll like it.

    Seconded.

Word is good. You can type in your text and format it correctly with Word just about as easily as anything else.

Frankly, if you need a better spellchecker or grammar checker, you should learn better spelling and grammar. Don't depend on your software to correct your prose - that's not what it's for. A writer should be able to write grammatically correct, properly spelled prose.

Liquid Story Binder has a lot of the same features, but better implementation, IMO.
