I haven't heard of this concept before, but I have read a novel with something similar. The Deverry Series by Katharine Kerr, has a major concept where characters don't have multiple personalities from their past souls but they do have traits. Basically it works alot like re-incarnation. Whenever someone dies, their soul is re-incarnated many years later (around 50-100 years I think). Their soul is re-incarnated in a new person, who has their own distinct personality and traits. But several traits are passed on with the soul. The first re-incarnations can be almost identical to their old selves, but the more re-incarnations the less like their original self.
