I was lurking around the Roleplay threads and did think about joining, but ultimately decided against it because vampires just weren't something I was too excited about.

I wonder if there were others who felt the same. Perhaps it would be best if the theme of the next roleplay covers a more broad audience. Something with less blood and killing, preferably.

That does sound like a good idea. And yeah, I had a feeling vampires were not the most popular bunch. So, if you want to help us brainstorm something we would all enjoy, please join in. No idea is too crazy as long as it adheres to forum rules.

    Gravy's thoughts:

I personally love fantasy-based roleplays. Urban, historical or whatever have you. I also like mythology and other supernatural things. For me, I have fun writing characters who are superhuman or inhuman. (Hence why we had the vampire roleplay.) But I am flexible and just like having a fantasy element.

I also know a lot of different TV shows, Anime and movies, if you all would rather do a fanfic/fandom style kinda roleplay.

A fantasy-based roleplay would be nice. I feel like fantasy is a popular genre that almost everyone has read at some point, plus, with fantasy, the sky is the limit. I think that's important if you want to have a broader audience. People's characters can be anything... including vampires if they so much want it. Anything can happen in the ropleplay, too.

This is a great idea. I like it. I think letting people chose what kind of character they have is good. The one downside though is that I feel the characters need to be able to get along? Like a mermaid is good, but needs to be able to walk on land. A vampire as well would need to find something like an umbrella. The key is making sure everyone interacts from the start. Because I think where things went south with the last RP was that our characters were all over the place. (100% my fault as I set up the story and location.)

So, this time, I would like for everyone to start in the same area? And also be types of characters people know. (AKA not from a work in progress and that goes for all of us.) However, you are free to make RPs of your stories, but know it's a RP, so things aren't going to be like your book. Nor are people writing your book for you.

That would be good. It can be done through an inciting incident that draws everyone to be in the same place.

But you should wait to see what other people think. That's just my idea and others may not like it as much, which is of course fine :)

That sounds like a decent place to start- but yes, we should see what others wish to do. I am happy to have another person intersted in joining.

Understood. Do you have anything you would like to roleplay? Maybe like a elemental magic society like Avatar the Last Airbender or something?

Or, would you all like me to brainstorm a list of possibilities to kick things off?

I read the vampire RP and I'm interested in joining but I had trouble understanding what was happening or how it works.

I haven't done RP before so I look forward to reading any new ones so I can see how it works.

Yeah, it was confusing. So we are trying to think of something new. Feel free to suggest a fandom or original idea

Just to put something on the table to get the creative juices flowing and to show my support, how about characters start off in a medieval tavern (It can be a futuristic club or whatever we want). Characters can kind of introduce themselves without starting a story, but the aim is to go on a quest or adventure, so the introduction should define roles if it is to be a combat kind of story, or maybe just appearance or a bit of character if it is more dramatic.

Anyway, at some point a person in need can come in and call for help, or post a quest on the notice board or something to start the story. If we don't want to do a quest, it can just be a rumor of something of interest or an interesting development among the patrons, something like that.

For example: The doors burst open and an obviously injured and exhausted man tumbled into the tavern amidst gasps and confused glances. The poor soul mumbled about the village of Darkroot, a small town to the south. His eyes widened in fear as he whispered on labored breath about a cloaked figure and disappearances. He begged for aid, since his dear wife had fallen victim to the shadowy figure despite his desperate fight. He claimed the figure summoned fanged beasts from the shadows of Whisperwood forest, and they obeyed its every sinister command. He held up his tattered arm as evidence and the tavern fell silent. But among the patrons some started to exchange looks of courage, honor and even some strangers exchanged winks acknowledging a thirst for adventure.

    Hope that helps.

Yes, we could go more of a DND Route. It might work better than the version of written roleplay I was going at. Because you're right. We wouldn't need to create a story. It would just happen. So, we would just need to agree on setting and time era. Which could work well and make it easier for everyone to build the world together, rather than myself saying 'it's like this'. If we do this style, I do ask however that you all come to me to settle a disagreement in the OOC thread.

I could also add some DnD elements as I have a set of dice. But on another note, do we want to set up this Tavern of Adventure? I think that's the title. @Louanne Learning @trevorD @Delusionist @ps102

probably easiest to all start at the same location rather than separate and then try to link up. Like at a party or at somewhere we'd all be at/.

I haven't played DnD, but a Tavern of Adventure sounds good.

I also don't understand DnD so I'll have to learn as I go. I don't know what a "Tavern of Adventure" is, either. A quick Google search suggests that it's just a starting point of sorts.

I am actually thinking since no one really knows much about Dnd, myself included, I can just remove that element from the story, if you want. So, what kind of world is this? Like Old Europe, Asia, North America?

I was considering joining the vampire thing but the Phoenix AZ setting didn't really grab me. And when it comes to vampires I like old-school gothic settings versus Vampire the Masquerade type stuff. More Le Fanu and Maturin than Anne Rice.

As far as a fantasy setting goes, I'm pretty open. Historical or semi-historical settings, like, say, 10th century Constantinople or Tang Dynasty China, would appeal to me but I'm not picky. Instead of the typical D&D sit-in-a-tavern-and-wait-for-a-quest opening I'd suggest something a bit more dynamic, that already puts the characters in some common circumstance. For instance, convicts on a prison ship who manage to escape. This also gives a helpful spark for backgrounds as everyone considers what they did to end up imprisoned.

If you want to introduce dice mechanics, I'm not super tech-savvy but it might be better to somehow introduce a dice bot instead of relying on the GM to roll the physical dice for you. In terms of rules, a system with minimal mechanics would probably work best for a play-by-post game, such as Tricube Tales which can allow some things that are normally protracted/ complicated in other games (especially combat) to be resolved in a single dice roll.

As a Greek, I seriously can't see Constantinople in a fantasy setting. It's just too weird. Or maybe I am the weird one.

Do people actually use it for fantasy settings?

I'm in Computer Science and I can tell you that, as things stand right now, the only way to achieve this would be with a web scraper using Selenium and your favorite programming language. I can do that, actually.

But bots are a strict no in the site... and so are secondary accounts. The admin staff would have to approve me creating a bot account and hooking a Selenium instance to it.

As Gravy said though, we probably won't go down the DnD route since most aren't familiar, so not necessary.
