New to the Forum, I come bearing questions.

Discussion in 'New Member Introductions' started by Gracie, May 1, 2008.

Hello! My name is Gracie, and Im quite excited to have found this site!

I really enjoy writing. Though Ive never professed at being any good at it, I find myself drawn back to it time and time again. I think I've always written in one form or another. Whether it be incredibly descriptive letters to penpals when I was growing up, long emails to friends, or little 'snippets' of stories. Sometimes I just like to come up with characters, and put them in scenarios just to see how it would pan out.

*Grins* Which brings me to question number one.

Have any of you participated in NamWriMo? I thought Id take a stab at it, just to see what comes of it. If you did.. what were your experiences? Did you really come up with a novel? The idea tempts me, only in the fact that it doesn't take itself too seriously. I find once I start getting too serious about something I enjoy doing, I tend to lose interest in it. This seemed like the perfect 'experiment' to try.

    And my second question.

In being fascinated by putting my own created characters in various scenarios, I discovered the internet game of RP. Though there are lots of sites out there, many of them don't encourage the 'writing' aspect of it. What I love about a good RP game is the backstory. The continuity, and context. When I tired of trying to find a comm with those sorts of things, I decided to create my own. With the help of another 'like minded' writer, we've gotten a rather neat little place down.

Id like to find places to advertise this little site in. What we're looking for is writers. Not 'one liners'. People to be part of the bigger story. Your site looks like a great place to have it.. but I don't want to 'spam' you with anything, unless someone points me in the right direction as to where to post this.

Or, could give me an idea of a few good websites to mention this on.

This looks like a really great place, Im looking forward to reading along here.

    An intrigued new member..

    ~Gracie

Hello Gracie, Welcome to the Writing Forums.

Bearing questions is much safer than questioning bears. But in regards to your questions, writing a novel in a month never appealed to me in the slightes, and I'm not all that into RPGs, either.

If you haven't explored the site yet, you should probably do so soon. Newcomers often gravitate to the Lounge, the Word Games, or the Review Room, but there is much more to be discovered if you poke in the corners. Remember to check out our FAQ as well!

As for the Review Room, new joiners often wonder why we do things a bit differently on this site than on other writing sites. We emphasize reviewing as a critical writing skill. Training your eye by reviewing other people's work helps you improve your own writing even before you present it for others to see. Therefore, we ask members to review other people's writing before posting work of their own. The Review Room forums on this site, therefore, are true workshops, not just a bulletin board for displaying your work (and on that note, please only post each item for review in one Review Room forum). See this post, Why Write Reviews Before Posting My Work? for more information.

Enjoy your stay here, and have fun!

Hello and welcome to WF.org. I hope that you find your time here both pleasant and enjoyable.
Take your time to look around and get to know the rules and the way the forum works. Also don't forget to check out the poetry and short story competitions. We currently have two running, along with the major short story contest where there is a cash prize.
On behalf of the reviewers, I would just like to let you know that if you would like a review of your work and have not received one, or you would like further reviews, just send one of us a PM and we would be more than happy to take a look as soon as we have the time.
There are lots of areas to get involved in, joint writing ventures, discussions all over the place and our community lounge where we can chat about anything in life, within reason.
Any questions, there are plenty of us around to ask. Our moderator base are very friendly and extremely helpful and always there if they are needed.
So all that out the way, have fun and see you around the boards.
    Torana

btw - there are more answers in questions then there are in the answers! <just a little saying someone dear to me always said when I was younger as I questioned everything in life and still do>

I'm new here, as well, but I've been a writer for a while so I'll take a stab at this. I've tried NaNo...and I crashed about halfway through. I put too much on my plate. You should defiantly try it--I got a long done before the crash, and even afterwards once I started recovering--but make sure that you put aside plenty of time to work on your novel. And don't be too harsh on yourself if you don't make it to the 50,000 word mark.
