Hello. Call me Vendredi. Or just D. How alive this forum is. I hope I don't get lost amidst all the other voices. As a writer I focus mostly on fantasy (and making the genre better) and non-fiction. I just recently moved to Georgia, from the cool comfortable North to the gasoline deprived South, so that conflict will probably find its way into my non-fiction work here and there. Otherwise, I hope I can introduce myself and my writing by actually sharing my writing. By then. ~D
Hello Vendredi, Welcome to the Writing Forums. If your voice is getting lost in the crowd, whisper. Nothing carries like a whisper. Posting your own work should not be the very first thing you do here. It is really worthwhile to see what other people have done to improve their writing, and see if some of it applies to your writing as well. That is part of why we require members to review other members' work before posting their own for review. On the other hand, there are no restrictions, other than content and copyright rules, on showcasing your work in your member blog. If you haven't explored the site yet, you should probably do so soon. Newcomers often gravitate to the Lounge, the Word Games, or the Review Room, but there is much more to be discovered if you poke in the corners. Remember to check out our FAQ as well, and be sure to read through the forum rules, too, to avoid any misunderstandings or hurt feelings. Respect for one another is our principal mandate. As for the Review Room, new joiners often wonder why we do things a bit differently on this site than on other writing sites. We emphasize reviewing as a critical writing skill. Training your eye by reviewing other people's work helps you improve your own writing even before you present it for others to see. Therefore, we ask members to review other people's writing before posting work of their own. The Review Room forums on this site, therefore, are true workshops, not just a bulletin board for displaying your work (and on that note, please only post each item for review in one Review Room forum). See this post, Why Write Reviews Before Posting My Work? for more information. And while you're looking around, don't forget to check out our Weekly Short Story Contest and Weekly Poetry Contest. They actually run more than one week apiece, but any member may enter, and all members are urged to vote for their favorites. Enjoy your stay here, and have fun!
Nothing carries like a brick. Senseless violence always gets the crowd going. j/k Welcome to the forum. It's a nice place, really. Fellow GA resident here (Stone Mountain). FYI, the gas thing is as new to me as it is to you. This whole mess only started about a week or two ago, and it's been a ton of fun so far. I love waiting an hour for the gas truck to re-fill the station only to realize the pump I'm parked at isn't supplied by the tank he just refilled so I have to go get in line behind everybody who got here an hour after me. Good times... gooood times.
Thank you Cogito for your information. Even though I have spent a few days looking around I still did not notice all the structure that you mentioned. I must confess I do not often read forum rules and sticky posts only because there is not usually any such rules in place, but I will take my time and read through them before anything else. Regardless, I was not going to share any of my work for a little while anyway. I want to be sure I am not dropping my precious things into piranha infested waters, so to speak. Also, I just visited Stone Mountain this past weekend. That was when I first realized there was trouble with gas going on out here. It was a beautiful park though, and such a pretty walk, dried stones, and yet there were trees growing out of the rock.
Welcome aboard Vendredi, the forum is easy to get hooked to. No worries about not having your voice heard, it'll be heard.
