Nanowrimo put this out and to me, it’s so insulting to writers with disabilities. They are capable of writing stories without AI help. https://www.wired.com/story/nanowrimo-organizers-classist-and-ableist-to-condemn-ai/ I agree with the people’s response to this. What do you think? I think it is the last nail in the coffin. Mods: if this thread belongs in the debate room, just delete it, please. But I was not sure as it is about AI.
I agree with you also but try not to let it bother you. People who need to use AI know that they are not real writers deep down. Anyone who needs to use AI for something like Nano know deep down that they are cheating themselves. Nano is a personal challenge that we can share our experiences with others who are fighting the same fight we are. I have done 7 challenges and have on finished once. I loved each one because I was able to learn more and make some decent friendships with some of my teammates. We also have to remember that Nano needs sponsors to keep running. It was only a matter of time some AI company was going to start throwing money at them. Ignore it and enjoy the personal challenge.
I honestly have ethical issues with AI as well. However, I do see your point. As for Nano, they can find better sponsors if they cleaned up their act.
WoW! I am dyslexic, so once I have crafted and written a story, I use Grammarly to check my spelling and round up my errant commas. I suppose Grammarly is considered by purists as. I an AI tool. However, I would never use AI to write the original story or even a blog post. I wonder what they mean by their comment. "Amidst all this, NaNoWriMo, a one-time haven for amateur writers of all kinds, seemingly took the stance that not only is it wrong to condemn AI, doing so is an affront to poor people or disabled people who may use it." I wonder how 'poor and disabled' are connected and why NaNoWriMo take this stance? It is insulting. I think NaNo are just covering their butts. I have completed two NaNoWriMo, and at 1666 words a day, I have typed until my fingers bled and my brain cells resembled mushy peas. I am now in the final edits of the book I wrote for NaNo in 2012. I believe writers who take pride in their achievements would never use AI to craft the story or churn out articles. Writers who use AI to complete NaNo are cheating (IMHO).
NaNo lost my support several years ago when it established a segregated and restricted thread, and suggested that POC are so incredibly fragile that they need a private place on a public forum to communicate among themselves free from the malign influence of PWithoutC. This is the antithesis of the diversity, equity, and inclusion the organization claims to champion. I'm old enough to remember a segregated society and object to the return of it in any form.
People of Color. People Without Color. The latter is merely my flight of fancy and not a mainline expression.
Honestly, I don’t count spellcheck as AI. I have dyslexia, too and it annoys me when people conflate ai and spellcheck. Because one only makes sure the words are spelled correctly. The other generates writing.
This is when and why I left. Because I hate segregation becoming cool again. And worse, I am one of those ‘fragile’ and ‘oppressed’ people. I hate being treated like that.
