Once the reader is hooked

    I'm certainly not saying it's brilliant, and 'brilliant' is not a word I'd use to describe anything in this category. lol. I'm just saying that it's a book you can't put down---for whatever reason--and because of this a tangent will be forgiven in a way that it is not in other books.

    Another example you might use is the Outlander series, by Diana Gabaldon. Granted the whole series has gone way over the top at this point and there are about 90 books to it (or whatever), but there is no doubt that people buy them and she is a continual bestseller. I got past the first three books myself and had to stop because it was wearing me out, but I think the appeal is that the story concept she came up with was really great. Ditto Harry Potter, though both JK Rowling and Gabaldon are better writers than the other two IMO.
