We have now read a children's fantasy by Neil Gaiman and a heavy work of literary fiction by Nabokov, so maybe we could go for something different this time. Also bear in mind that we're not restricted to novels - if you want to suggest a book of poetry, a collection of stories, a comic, a play, a film, all these texts will work too. Thanks in advance!
Thanks for setting this up. I will suggest The Killer Angels by Michael Shaara. It's a great piece of historical fiction set during the Battle of Gettysburg (The American Civil War).
Chain Mail, by Hiroshi Ishizaki. Four girls who've never met in real life set up a roleplaying story about a girl being stalked by a sociopath. The story they write is interesting, but the stakes are upped when life begins imitating art.
Seconded!!!! I read this book in high school and loved it. It could definitely lead to some interesting discussion.

I recommend To the Lighthouse by Virginia Woolf. When was the last time this book club chose a book by a female author? (Clever feminist tactic to push my choice )
Or we could wait until October for a female writer and read Frankenstein Oh, and I do think Frankenstein would be a fantastic choice for October. Or possibly Rime of the Ancient Mariner. Or the Monk. The Monk could inspire some... interesting conversation.
I cannot recommend enough the book The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold. It's a coming of age story--but here's the kicker: it's told in first-person narrative by a 14-year-old girl who was raped & murdered. I just read that Peter Jackson purchased the rights to the book. He is directing the movie, which will be released later in the year.
