    Other words similar for this

Discussion in 'Character Development' started by Vianca, Jun 30, 2017.

I am describing one of my Characters from the POV of my MC.

"She was like a porcelain doll, her skin was flawless, high cheekbones, big round eyes, full heart shaped lips" this is the description I am second doubting.

I want to portray her as almost unreal. To my MC she is the epidemy of Beauty. Well his POV.
Are there any other words to describe the same visual?

Voluptuous is always a good lip word... also supple, sensual, lascivious, pouty (a bit cliche)...

My all time favorite is "pipe-fitter lips," courtesy of Big Pussy Bompensiero

Do you actually imagine them to be heart shaped? If this is the image in your mind, surely this is the image you want your readers to have, right?

Although you might want to use something like this description: "lips like petals falling apart". I heard that in the lyrics of a country and western song, but I can't remember the name of the artist or song.
But it works so well at portraying a delicate, innocent kind of beauty - I'm assuming that's what you're going for?

I have the perfect image in my mind. Laying it down, well not so much

So the description is from the mind of the MC, and you already start with a simile, that she's like a porcelain doll. This feels like an emotional engagement for what he sees rather than a technical one. It's my personal opinion, you should stick with that. It's visceral. Don't go from that to a technical schematic. And if he's noticing this much, then I would opt for a metaphor, not a simile. She is a porcelain doll, not like one. A metaphor is stronger than a simile. Her lips are a juxtaposition to the demure refinement one thinks of in a porcelain doll. They are lush, sensual, generous. We don't need them drawn for us; we need to know how the MC feels when he sees them. Lips are a sexual thing. If they matter enough to describe the way your MC sees them, then they matter enough to be described in terms of sensuality.

She had skin smooth as porcelain. Her large eyes set on high cheek bones, and her lips a plush heart shaped.

I am not much of a fan of the list format description.
Try being a bit more like what Wrey said, and play
around for a bit. Make it more interesting and
    imaginative.

Her milky flesh glowed, as if made of glass. With a large soft emerald gaze, that rested on
her high sculpted cheeks. And her lips are plush as a pillow, forming a heart on her soft
features. To him she appeared cast into the finest crafted doll that he ever laid eyes on.

This is a good point. If the Vianca wants all those images listed in her first try at this, then the porcelain-doll image should be last in the list, not first.

Also, and by the way, Vianca, be careful in your spelling. I'm sure you didn't mean "epidemy" of Beauty. (Look it up if you don't know what it means.) :p

YES! exactly like her. But her hair is longer, her cheeks are puffy, her face would be round but this is it definitely. The picture not the cartoon. She's gorgeous
