    Hello from cloudy Australia

Discussion in 'New Member Introductions' started by B.S-H, Jan 14, 2012.

    Hello everyone,

Thought I would make an introduction post for two reasons, the first being to introduce myself but I also want to play around with the post settings and such before I dive into the community.

I have been involved in Politics since I was 16, I do a lot of work for grassroots Environmental organisations, the reason I mention this is because I am trained in 'Personal Narrative', consider yourself warned. ;)

I reside in the Westernmost part of Sydney, I can take the train an hour east to see the iconic Opera house and whatever else people go to see in Sydney or I can go an hour west and explore a vast mountain range with cozy little towns dotted throughout it. It is an amazing place to live in as far as I have the the amazing culture of Sydney to one side while on the other side I can immerse myself in nature for days, I can explore dark caverns with naught but a torch on my helmet or find relics from this continents Indigenous and Colonial histories while trekking through dense bushland and forest.

Anyway, I found my inspiration to write when I was traveling across New Zealand with my grandparents at the tender age of 13, books were the only thing to keep me sane. Grandma is a professional nagger, I swear if nagging was a profession she would be the industries standard. Don't get me wrong though, she is a lovely lady. . Just better in small doses. I only brought a single book with me from home, at that time I didn't much care about books, but when you're stuck in a car for 3 hours and you've got nothing to do but read, you read. That book was Shadow of a Dark Queen by Raymond E. Feist and it threw my mind open to the possibilities. I remember using the single public phone at a caravan park we stayed at to call my mum on the other side of the Tasman, back in Sydney, asking her if she could go to Borders and buy every Raymond E. Feist book she could find. I celebrated my Birthday in New Zealand and that ended up being my present. During the many many months of cracking through those books a seed planted itself and by the time I was done it had grown.

When I started writing I started with high expectations, thinking I'd be averaging 100 pages a day at the very least but the reality was I spent 4 hours and produced about 2 pages. It wouldn't be fair to say they were carbon copies of R.E.Fs works because that would imply what I wrote was actually good, I was basically stealing the plot and changing character names, but hey, gotta start somewhere. Today I am an 18 year old, though I turn 19 in just over a week. That means I have been writing for some 5 or 6 years now, which is kind of nuts when I think about it. Long gone are my days of imitation, I have about a dozen originalcompletedshort stories under my belt, some of them are even half-decent while others are hilariously bad.

I am currently working on a novel and I have a good feeling about this one. Its been in the works for over a year now. I have finished a rough copy and I am now in the process of rewritting it, adding content, fixing plot lines that don't lead anywhere. You know, the usual.

That is probably enough from me, looking forward to getting to 'know' you all over the coming months, perhaps years.

    Welcome to Writing Forums, B.S-H!

I hope you find what you're looking for here, whatever your interests in writing.

This forum aims to provide the best workshopping resources on the internet, and to that end we have a few rules which you should familiarise yourself with before you get stuck in. The main section of the site is the Writing Workshop, where members can post their writing in order to receive critique of their work.

However, before we allow members to post their work, they must have met some basic requirments. Firstly, you must have been a member for fourteen days, and have made twenty posts on the forum overall (please note, posts in Word Games do not count towards this). This is so that members, when they post their work, have familiarised themselves with the forums and contributed to them (as well as hopefully learned something for themselves). Secondly, members must provide two constructive reviews of other people's work for each piece of their own that they wish to post. This is because we believe that the focus of workshopping should be equally upon giving reviews as receiving them, as they allow a writer to practice and improve their editing skills, which they can then apply to their own writing.

Beyond the Writing Workshop, you will find that we have extensive forums for discussion of aspects of writing, as well as a community area for general discussion. We also run periodic short story and poetry contests, which are good for challenging yourself and expanding your skills.

If you have any questions or problems, then the moderators (myself and Cogito) should be your first port of call. Any technical problems with the site itself should be directed to Daniel, the site administrator and owner. I would recommend you have a look over the rules so that you know what to expect, and what is expected. But aside from that, I hope you enjoy your time here.
