Hey guys, I have a character in my book that needs the following... let's call it "life path": College Active duty in the army/marines during a fictional conflict (not an officer). Conflict ends. He is discharged and goes back home. Gets married (maybe has kids, TBD) Opens up a startup. About 10 years (could be a bit less) after the previous conflict ends, a new one begins and he is sent overseas again. KIA. Does this make sense? Does it only make sense under certain conditions? Since I'm from Israel, I know that this "path" totally makes sense here (except that 1 comes after 2, and 6 happens when you are in the army reserves), but going over army websites and Wikipedia pages about it, trying to understand who gets called when left me more confused than I was when I started... Thanks
I think their is an age limit, but here in the states, soldiers in any branch can be reactivated into service depending on what they need. So specialists in a given field would be the first to be called to active duty (communications, and technical stuff like that, possibly even special forces). However, I think they have to be extremely short staffed or hard pressed before they call on the retired personnel, or that they have a security clearance that they require them to have in order to do their job effectively.
When I left the military there was another four years in the reserves. Maybe your MC could be reactivated from there.
Thanks Thundair, is there a way I could PM you somehow and ask a few more questions about your service?
