Poetic Prose Style: An accident of predetermined vocabulary?

Discussion in 'Word Mechanics' started by waitingforzion, Aug 25, 2017.

When I look at pieces written before that flow with poetic cadence, I wonder how the words contained therein could be changed into ones more common, and how those that were chosen fall perfectly together, without much handling of syntax, into a rhythm with the sound of dignity and majesty. It seems like our language was fixed beforehand, to adorn certain strings of words, for what other reason can we provide for the beauty of the most common words, when not every sentence that has them is beautiful, but those that are found in certain works? Could it be that the King James Bible has cadence by the hand of God, providing our language with a set of words that the translators would select, that this translation of the Holy Scriptures might flow with poetic cadence, though the words they chose were the most direct in their time?
