Past Contest Poetry contest #269 -- theme: "Halloween"

Discussion in 'Monthly Poetry Contest' started by theoriginalmonsterman, Oct 25, 2015.

The last contest never got any entries by its due date, so I decided it would be for the best to start-up a new one.

This contest’s theme is going to be "Halloween" suggested by myself! Feel free to interpret the theme in any way you want, but please make sure your poem does include the theme in some way.

All entries are due by 11:59 PM Eastern Time (ET) on Saturday, November 14th. All entries should be posted directly in this thread. Replies will be anonymized by the anonymizer system, and they will be de-anonymized once voting ends. Keep in mind that you're responsible for making sure the formatting of your poem is correct.

To make it easier on everyone I've gone ahead to set the entry due date time back to the normal 3-week schedule. Sorry if I rushed anyone. The theme will still be Halloween even though Halloween will be long over by the time this contest is done, but I don't think that should be a problem.

Good luck to everyone who enters in the contest, but most importantly have fun!

I imagine the air is crisp and cold

    Swallowing the body

Like death preventing me growing old.

The fabric wears thin, I think I’ll reach through

    Shrieks from by the church

But I need to cast an eye on the girl I knew.

Stepping out of my new door, fear grips me

    As my hollow eyes see

Her bed freshly made, no, not she!

A curious feeling, both happy and sad,

    Rises within me

But empty like death, driving me mad.

Gossamer hands rise from the earth,

    At last once more,

Here in my arms, a safe berth.

    All Hallows' Eve

Dark settles on the town like a blanket
Fog drips down from the hills
    Moonrise sets the fog aglow
    Shadows darken with edges unfocused

Children with painted faces and bags of candy
    Disappear through doors
Eyes peer out after the children
Checking that the path is clear
    Before the doors close tight
    Sealing the children safely inside

Candles in Jack O Lanterns burn low
Bats and owls stretch and stir
Black cats silently pad across fence tops
Stopping to pierce the air with eerie howls
Something else moves in the night

A late knock on the door
    Hesitation, it opens a crack
    Light spills from inside
Trick or Treat? a small voice says

It’s so late, are you alone? an answer comes
Oh no, never. Mummy’s with me
The kind face searches the dark path
Wondering about a child so small, out so late.
Chocolate bars drop in the bag

    Morning comes, the town awakens.
    Milk bottles clink on porches
Dogs on leashes sniff where black cats passed
Children sneak candy into lunch sacks
    Parents look the other way
    Memories of themselves awakened

    And on every doorstep oddly
    A single spilled candy
Where it came from a mystery
    Brushed aside in disbelief

    Blood moon in the sky
    Calling the dead to arise
    Bones rattle in the wind
    Hell’s door is wide open
Are there any fools who would like
To go ‘Trick or Treating’ tonight?

    Little Legs
    Same thing as the rest
A noble heart, I do detest

Clawing the wood, small little souls
Whipping their hands and empty bowls
Here again with a knocking beat
I open the door, "trick or treat!"

    Brave lad, alone this night
Arousal I seek, but I fear for the sight
So I huff and puff till he simply leaves
Later I say, for the night must weave

A desperate tale of a missing face
Another body in my cold embrace
Bloody steps to a lifeless doll
    Another child taken, after fall

I will grasp my chance like a hungry bee
For the honey is sweet, they shall see
My bowl is sexual, so is my intent
For I'm the corrupt one, the seeking agent

    Here again, another soul comes.
Knocking on my dark door, the cheerful hums
Little girl, she staggers at the mat
The eyes are gone, I take my bat

The mat is cleaned and the footprints dry
For now, I wait for the police to pry
I sit near the fire, admiring my work
'Shh Daisy, for tasty is your pork'
