    Accidentally in Love

    A touch too quickly, around the blind bend,
    His weekly takeaway trip is nearing its end.
    Driven by worry, in too much of a hurry,
    Excessive speed to avoid a luke warm curry.

    As he leaves the apex, into the road,
    Confidently, happily, unwaveringly she strode.
    Lithe of limb with short auburn hair,
    Eyes reflecting the beam, but still unaware.

    He sees her too late, he stamps on the brake,
    Can’t turn back the clock to erase his mistake.
    Her life flashes before him as she’s fixed in his sight,
    She’s no time to consider to fight or to flight.

    The brakes do their job, but alas just too late,
    Bumper jars bone like hammer on plate.
    Briefly he sits, his body much weaker,
    Leather seats draped in Pilau and Tikka.

    Senses returning he stumbles to her aid,
    Dreading to witness the scene he has made.
    She lies on the tarmac, petrified, still breathing,
    Despite no words, he senses her pleading.

    A small chance of life without a moment to spare,
    He rushes her beautiful, broken frame for urgent care.
    Without any id, he knew not her name,
    Life or death, he would wait just the same.

    All night he sat, fearing the most terrible news,
    Whilst she embarked on a battle she could easily lose.
    As the inky night exchanged places with the light,
    She’d made it through, she was going to be alright!

    The nurse said her name they could not trace,
    And that when recovered she would need a place.
    In parallel to his grief the man was so smitten,
    Of course he would take on this beautiful kitten.

    Common Accidents and How We Treated Them

    We fell in love by accident,

    Bumped into each other and apologised, very politely.

    Dropped the façade on the kitchen floor;

    Shards flung far and wide as we spread our reach.

    Spilt milk didn’t bring any tears,

    We slipped on the slick and caught each other – it was lucky you were there.

    But then we got our feet tangled:

    An untidy web of cables, family and friends.

    Muscles strained under the weight of expectation.

    No longer two halves of one whole; there was a need for fine chopping.

    A hand slipped with the knife, cutting comments.

    We hid the wound under a sticking plaster – let me kiss it better.

    Home truths were difficult to swallow;

    we didn’t chew properly and choked.

    It was no longer a cuddle but a Heimlich manoeuvre.

    Too hot to handle I swore and needed some other ointment.

    I knew better than to return to a lit firework.

    Moving away, I swung the plank without looking – Sorry, I didn’t mean it.

    the inevitable heart.

    lit another smoke.
    smiled across the bar last night.
    fell in Love again.

    stranger in my bed
    smells of soured apricots.
    never caught her name.

    she absconds pre-dawn.
    no explanation needed;
    I tick like a bomb.

    I’m a mad junkie.
    brown eyes are my black tar sin,
    my heart in a spoon.

    another dank bar.
    this girl cries like I want to.
    I think I’m in Love.

    from across the room i saw where you sat;
    eyes so strikingly blue, hair inexplicably red
    lips upturned in a smile;
    (my heart skipped a beat)
    promise me we'll be here for a while

    across town she's alone, streaming netflix,
    while i'm out with my friends, but she urged me,
    "baby go, i got this"

    from across the bar i watch how you dance;
    hips so temptingly loose, i don't stand a chance
    swayed away from my sight;
    (my heart skipped a beat)
    damned me, i'll be yours for the night
