Depending on how you define “professionals,” I believe that I can give a practical answer. I speak for many folks in video production and independent film when I recommend using pencil and paper instead of software. All that’s really required for a good storyboard is a shot list, a rough sketch of each shot, and instructions for camera operations (e.g. pan, tilt, and zoom). Stick figures and simple shapes are adequate for storyboard drawings. In my digital media classes, we always used pencil and paper for making storyboards, as we did for our brainstorming, thumbnails, and sketches for graphic designs.
