This really isn't random and useless, but I have been reading today about the scorching heat in the UK. Hottest temps on record.

Heatwaves are getting more extreme. The climate crisis is real and it is scary.

Can we adapt our way out of it?

That makes me wonder how the English and the Welsh players will cope with the Qatari weather during this year's World Cup. Harry Kane collapsed when he trained in South Korea.

Steinbeck in Travels With Charley: "In one trait I am predictable. I dislike being late. I arrive at the theater while they are sweeping out from the matinee. I haunt a ship hours before it has any intention of sailing. Reluctantly accepting a cocktail invitation, I usually arrive before my hostess is out of the tub." This is me as well. I am a notorious "early-arriver." I hate "burning daylight," as the expression goes on overnight bicycle trips. I'm invariably at the airport hours before my flight time -- not only to avoid any issues, but also because I love that interlude between required actions; I like having nothing to do and time not to do it. My wife is the opposite -- she likes to arrive at the airport at the last possible reasonable moment, rather than "wasting time," as she puts it. In her case my pressure to arrive early is primarily aimed at avoiding problems, like car trouble or the like, a concern aggravated by the fact that many of her flights are international, with domestic connecting flights. And dare I say that so long as she is going to be gone anyway, I'd like to get started on that early. But don't tell her -- she'd take it the wrong way.

Drove back home from the office this afternoon and, not sure how accurate my car temperature sensor is, but the outside temperature was measured at 40 degrees C !

Despite having the aircon on, I was perspiring profusely.

We topped out at 101 in my neck of the woods and the Met Office has confirmed parts of the UK hit the highest ever recoded temperatures. It’s been unbearable.

The world’s hottest temperature was recorded in 1922 at Death Valley, California, clocking in at a little over 132 F.

You've sent me down a wormhole of record weather events. Apparently the longest-duration single flash of lightning was over 17 seconds. I'm struggling to even picture how that would look...

I think all the players were collapsing because Conte has intense preseasons. But that's why the WC is in the winter this time around. Qatar averages 70-80°F in that period.

Back when my children were babies, we had an electric storm with lightening flashes at the rate of about one every second or two. I am not an easily frightened person, but that storm scared me half to death. There must've been a dozen direct hits on the ridge behind my house and I wasn't sure that the house wouldn't be next. It took an hour to pass over, then I was able to stand at my front window (clear skies and stars overhead) and watch the storm move east down the river valley. Next day I went walking at the state park. There were limbs down everywhere, and I saw one tree that had been split to the base by lightning. I grew up in storm country, but that storm was one for the books.

The ice storms in NH made trees explode. Not like glass into smithereens, but when they went down they shattered. Loud like you wouldn't believe.

Send the rain here. In this semi-arid environment, there is nothing dull about rain.

It's 0625 and I'm about to leave to catch the 0643 bus. I'll arrive at work at about 0715. Classes start at 0900.

    I feel you.

Lots of dead birds in my neck of the woods. Found like 3 of them in my yard in past few weeks, and observed another half dozen or so walking my dog around the hood. DEM says there's some kind of bird flu going around, but I'm pulling for something more biblical.

I think it was recorded by a weather satellite with some kind of fancy sensors.

Well, it didn’t rain here, but I was talking more about things like storms and snow. In the UK heavy snow translates to 2” of the stuff that stays… ooh, all of 18 hours. While ‘big’ storms means a couple of distant rumbles and a quick flash… if you’re lucky.

Is it suspicious that the Euro lottery always rolls over into the high 100 millions before someone wins? Or is there some kind of maths/law of averages thing going on?

Jennifer Lopez is marrying Ben Affleck. The last three times J-Lo got married, Tom Brady won a championship. As if that motherfucker needs any more luck!
