    Semicolon after a list

Discussion in 'Word Mechanics' started by eulia, Aug 8, 2010.

Example: I enjoy swimming, hiking, and canoeing; all of which influenced the trip.

Is this correct? If wrong, what would be the proper way?

    Thanks in advance.

That looks okay to me, because the semi-colon is what can be referred to as a super-comma; it breaks the sentence up because of different points made.

    It should be a comma.

I don't think the supercomma means what you think it means (in the words of Inigo Montoya :p).

I think that for the semicolon, you'd need another full sentence, as in:

I enjoy swimming, hiking, and canoeing; Joe, on the other hand, enjoys nothing more than a good nap.

(Not that actually I'd write it that way. I'd make it two sentences, but I _think_ that my example is grammatically correct)

    Yep, it looks correct.

    You could even write:

I enjoy swimming, hiking, and canoeing; Joe enjoys nothing more than a good nap.

Also, here's an example of how to use a supercomma (which was mentioned in one of the posts above):

We visited Portland, Oregon; Seattle, Washington; and Bonners Ferry, Idaho.
