Local TV used to have an obsession with subtitles, making sure that the audience knew exactly what everyone was saying even if the storyline required the MCs (and by extension the audience) to not know what the bad guys were saying.

My Name is Earl had some fun with subs apparently. The on-screen subtitles of Catalina speaking Spanish would show the tirade that fit the storyline, but what she was actually doing was thanking Spanish speakers for watching the show.

In 1978 I was an exchange student in Kabul Afghanistan. One night we went to see the spaghetti western, "A Town Called Hell." The voices were dubbed in Persian, then English subtitles added based on the Persian dialogue. I guess because of Islamic sensitivities they couldn't use the word "hell" so the film was titled "A Town Called Bastard." Never did figure out how they got from the one word to the other.

Listening to the History of China podcast by Chris Stewart. Good lord, the political shenanigans the royal families, their consorts, and eunuchs did would make even George R.R. Martin blush. And we thought Rome had all the drama.

    Ch 2.

Aaron dismissed the soft, velvety aloe vera in favour of a large, and decidedly phallic, prickly pear...

I like salad cream, a lot. I larrup the stuff on my sandwiches. But how is it, no matter how careful you are not to let it ooze out of your sandwich and down your front, or how thoroughly you wash your hands and mouth after eating, you're guaranteed to get intermittent whiffs of the stuff for the rest of the day?

I'm wishing I'd ordered my camera at the start of lockdown. Knowing my luck on the day it arrives it'll all be over and I'll get the call to return to work.

It was indeed. Right after the Communists took over, but before the Russians invaded. The calm before the storm. Still beautiful and open. Friendly people who would confide how much they liked the US and hated the Russians. We circumnavigated the country and saw many things, including the "Buddhas of Bamyan," giant carved Buddhas on the face of a mountain - the Taliban used them for artillery practice and destroyed them totally.

I heard similar stories from one of my professors. Sad that we'll probably never be able to visit (again).

I had an intensely sexual dream last night and woke up confused about whether or not I'd gotten laid.

I didn't, which is mildly disappointing, but damn. That's the last time I eat the remnants of a pint of ice cream before bed.

A Farewell to Arms would be a good book if it was 600 pages long and actually had characterization beyond drinking wine and a most cheesy love interest. I do not look forward to reading For Whom the Bell Tolls. Good thing I have six books between this and that.

You heard it here first folks: be wary of ice cream before bed, or you may wake up disappointed. :p

Euh euh euh...don't think I've had a mucky dream for about 150 years...

    ...

I should warn young folk also - as to the state of man's penis-genital in the later years - and I must have been 38 when it first became attached to my inner thigh, symbiotic-wise, and try as I might, would not dislodge from the embrace, becoming a green/black lump, fine inside trousers and fine as a puss & slime coating over the green black lump arrangement but as a working tool of lovefare quite useless. Anyway that 's what @OurJud told me, hoh [shit]

I already bought the book, man.

Note to self: do not buy more than one book of an author unless you are certain that you will like it.

Fair enough but I do sympathise. I barely made the half way point of To Have and Have Not before giving up.

Having just watched a film about a married couple where the wife loses all memory of her husband... I started worrying about how I would deal with that if @Cave Troll forgot about me. My first thought was that I should start wearing perfume just in case. o_O
