I did when I was a child, up to about the age of 14 or so, but I can't remember the last time it happened to me. I don't recall those incidents as pleasant.

You quite likely were actually. There are many strange states in the grey zone between awake and asleep. In fact for a few moments when you wake in the morning the conscious mind isn't fully 'online' yet, and the unconscious is still in charge and still dreaming away. It continues to do so for some time but it's blotted out by the much 'louder' and more insistent conscious mind, the sun to its pale moon. Often you can see the moon in the sky in the evening or morning, but it's overpowered by the far brighter light of the sun. That's an apt metaphor for the 2 different minds housed in all of us. The unconscious is always functioning, though it does cycle through the various stages (Alpha, Delta, Theta etc).

In fact REM state doesn't only happen when you're asleep. It can persist a good ways into waking consciousness, especially if you're sleep deprived. If you sit quietly and clear your mind of noisy conscious activity you can sometimes feel it, a strange exhilarating sensation often accompanied by a sort of sense of acceleration or maybe of spinning and drifting that's extremely subtle but as you move closer toward sleep it increases until it takes over and becomes a dream. This is stuff I've studied pretty extensively and observed countless times in myself. In fact it's quite common, when someone manages to notice these near-sleep states, for them to believe it's something supernatural or that they're going crazy. It's just that normally we don't pay any attention and don't notice them. But if you start to pay attention to these states, especially if you study up on things like lucid dreaming and sleep and dream science, you can begin to notice it more and more.

Maybe. It’s true to say my quality of sleep lately hasn’t been good because of this shoulder problem of mine.

Does anyone know the name of the first tune in this clip. I can only think it’s where the “Dum de-de-dum-dum, dum dum” riff originates, but I’m looking for the name of the tune. Starts at 0:50

Wikipedia says the earliest use of the 'Shave and a Haircut' riff is from 1899 but that may not be the one here. Check this list:

It does seem to be Shave & a Haircut, with several other songs interspersed. The whole musical piece is called Medley of Patriotic Songs, so I suppose it's one of them. The words to it are 'Shave and a haircut--two bits'.

Okay, but Shave and Haircut is the name of the “Dum de-de-dum-dum, dum dum” riff. I’m looking for the name of the tune that the riff is tacked on to. It seems, from the wiki link, that the riff is often tacked on to the end of songs for comedic effect, so the two aren’t necessarily linked. Regardless, it’s the tune I’m trying to learn the name of.

    This might be it:

"Hatley was the music director at the Hal Roach Studios in Culver City,
California. He provided the music for the piano just out of camera
range, playing "Turkey in the Straw" which was the first tune of what
the piano roll leader calls "Patriotic Medley"."

I'm familiar with Turkey in the Straw-we all probably are, it's been used in countless things. I can't remember offhand what it sounds like though.

Here's Turkey in the Straw. I can't tell if this is it or not, I keep going back and forth listening and it sounds similar but different. Ironically, the guy playing the trumpet looks like Oliver Hardy:

No, if you're talking about the very first group of notes, it doesn't seem to be Turkey in the Straw. It's extremely familiar though, some kind of Cavalry charge thing or something.

Interestingly, the Wikipedia article does mention 'Turkey in the Straw', but only because it was also featured in 'Square Dance' by Dave Brubeck, which ends with 'Shave and a Haircut'.

I just noticed this in that article:

"The piano demonstrated at the beginning of the film was playing "The
King's Horses (and the King's Men)," and may well have been an actual
piano roll rather than Hatley playing."

Here's the article: Laurel & Hardy, Piano Movers in "The Music Box"

No, your clip doesn't include the beginning of the movie, so that wouldn't be it either.

You could try Reddit r/tipofmytongue and have a good chance of getting an answer, just be specific that you aren't looking for 'Shave and a Haircut' as you'll be inundated with that answer. If someone finds it, make sure to respond Solved! to their post

I'm now listening to bugle calls and cavalry charges on YouTube. The problem is, every time I hear part of a song it knocks the original out of my head and I have to go back and listen to it again. Lol, this could take all day!

It's an old fiddle tune called "Arkansas Traveler."

Sterling work, @Xoic, thanks. However we can all sleep soundly tonight as Mr Kugelshreiber has cracked it!! How’d you find it? I did try Siri as it was playing but she didn’t know it either. Anyway, thanks all.

I'd heard it before but I couldn't remember the name, so I went to the YouTube comments where someone had already posted the name of the tune. Second comment down.

Ah, I watched the clip through a search engine. Didn’t occur to check the comments on YT itself. So let me get this right. Are you saying a YT poster has actually served a purpose for once?

I'm bringin' home a baby bumblebee
Won't my mommy be so proud of me
I'm bringin' home a baby bumblebee—Ow! It stung me!

I'm squishin' up my baby bumblebee
Won't my mommy be so proud of me
I'm squishin' up my baby bumblebee-Yuck! It's dirty!

    More from the Wiki article:

As soon as I heard it in that clip Friedrich provided I recognized it and knew I had heard it in old cartoons. And yeas, I've definitely heard the bumblebee lyrics with it too.

Random event thread? Yesterday was one of them bad internet days. I posted in a hobby forum asking anyone if they knew where to find some out-of-production parts and got two helpful (but not terribly useful, unfortunately) answers and one tirade from some troll berating me for wanting to use an antique again.

I was in the subforum for said antique.

Unfortunately, that particular forum's management thinks it's "cool" and "tough" to "roll with the punches" in threads. In other words, they don't give a shit about trolls, which is why I visit there only as a last resort. I know, sticks and stones, but it still put a wee drop of urine in my Wheaties.

Then an...let's call it an alumni group I belong to on FB started to self-destruct. Long story short, it's not a religion group but there are a couple of members who feel the need to proselytize at every opportunity. Posting live-streams of their worship services, extremist memes about the eventual fate of folks who disagree with their specific faith, etc. I'm not a fan of their specific faith, but the more important issue was relevance. Like if I decided to flood the Word Mechanics section of this forum with posts on cooking; it's just not the right venue. However, it seems that a majority of the members there either like that particular flavor of faith or think that "freedom of speech" means that admins/mods can't establish boundaries. And the admins seem to agree.

Membership is plummeting, so one of my friends there established a splinter sect alternate FB group this morning and invited me to be the archbishop first moderator.

So I'm back in that saddle again, on a different horse.

    Sigh.
