Interesting, I've never thought about it in that way, possibly because I'm not a really a performer. Also possibly because it's the creative part of writing that I'm most interested in.
Sigh. Submitted a poem to a greeting card company and it made it through the first round only to be rejected in the end. And it was a long, long process too- submitted the dang thing in Oct 2017 and they finally, finally, got back to me with the final result. I think I'm more disappointed that I didn't get the $300 that came with getting selected, bc at the time the letter came (last week) we were flat broke. It would have been fortuitous.
Your poem must be good to have made it so far. You'll get there. Send the card company another poem, and send the poem out to another place. I think Rattle has been putting out some great poetry. You might want to try there.
Though your friends may be few this card is for you ...is a diff genre to Rattle, I think so. The greetings card sorority gather over on Absol lamenting since '74 the decline in Hallmark revenues. They're sort of cool like reptile owners, y'know? [and superior to Rattle poets on the 'pecking order'].
63 day acceptance for two of my poems in my university's MFA literary journal, absolutely delighted considering they've consecutively rejected all of my prior submissions to them. It's out next week, if any of you are interested in reading my stuff, send me a PM and I'll pass on the journal when it's published. Still waiting to hear back from a few more places, and have been trying to finish a ton of stories that still haven't come together yet. Mmhm, the main national newspaper in my country tries to champion new writers by publishing their short stories or poetry, it's actually how a lot of big names today would have gotten their names in print to begin with two or three decades ago. A pretty cool initiative. I just sent off three poems to them there.
Thanks for the tip about Rattle. Submitted 3 poems to them today, 2 of which won poetry contests on this site, (so hopefully that means they have some merit). Response said it's about a 6 month waiting period to hear back, so fingers crossed.
They ultimately said they will not be publishing my story. I'm not sure how much if any serious consideration my piece was given, but it seems to have been read at least. Some nice things were said but nothing that's going to change my life. A little encouragement is always good. Usually, they respond with silence. No response = rejection. And I've gotten that too. So, to actually hear from them with a nice line or two feels pretty good... momentarily. Three months ago I sent the what I thought was the best story I had ever written. Since that time I've written something I think is better. They have not heard the last from me.
