Yeah this would probably be a good discussion for debate room.

But by betterment I mean like curing illnesses with medical science which would save many lives, safer alternative energies, better means of travel and just all around better lives for people is what I meant by betterment.

    But yes.

I totally agree lets explore the ideas and what they do to others and ourselves in our narratives.

But I'm not so good at debating myself about this and sorry couldn't offer more like good argument but yeah go for it in the debate room. I suppose it would be like a thread on advancing vs staying the same or reverting back to very old ways?

    Something like that?

Something like that. I'm interested in getting to the bottom of what advancement is, according to whom. Also, who gets to define what humanity is. Much of it comes down to power, which makes it pretty complicated.

This is a great post! This is an issue I have been dealing with in one of my stories and at times it's paralyzing. I don't want to make the future too far-fetched but I don't want to have to envision every type of technology 100 years from now. Researching specific items (weather, clothes) and focusing on those and kind of glossing over the other stuff might work!

I'm going to try and not mention things which have already been covered but I skimmed over some of the longer comments so I apologize if I'm redundant.

Some possible changes are a higher emphasis on learning, kids now are growing up with the internet and google never more than a thought away, as such whenever they have a question about something they just look it up and read about it, this will likely carry over into their mentality as working and voting adults resulting in higher levels of accountability in all sectors of government and business.

Flying autonomous cars is an easy reach being only a couple years away from grounded ones. Robots and advanced human prosthesis, even now there are functioning early models of prosthetic arms that let amputees feel what theyre touching and glasses giving vision to blind people. Advancing on the robotics, a more socialist future is also likely, in an economy where the vast majority of human labor is replaced by machines the chances are the people will rather those machines be owned by the state than by the rich, the result of which being that people only work if they want to, ie: fulfilling a passion. While currency would likely still exist it would become something rarer which people spend on luxury goods.

Another idea is that people will become more open, as the internet exposes people to new and often opposing ideas people tend to drift toward the middle ground as demonstrated by millennials, additionally that wide availability of information and the inherent lack of privacy with internet use will also likely lead people to be more understanding of vice rather than more conservative in what they share.

Cities may begin to dissipate, from the segway to the new "hover board" there is a definite move toward personal transportation, additionally once manual driving is illegal the roads wont need speed limits or traffic signals, using wireless networks such as the 5G Britain is working on they will be able to sync their actions, and the move toward renewable energy such as some sort of better nuclear battery eliminate the drain on gas for long rides. In such a situation people are likely to prefer more breathing room.

Prisons will likely move further away from draconian methods of punishment and move towards honest rehabilitation through counselling or direct neural alterations.

Quantum computers will lead to whole new levels of artificial intelligence encouraging governments or really anyone in a powerful leadership position to use one as a sort of ultra intelligent adviser. The power of those machines is almost unimaginable. This idea is further backed up by the on going attempt to write programs which can learn and write new functions for themselves which would allow computers to analyze geopolitics, consumer trends, any thing really and make decisions regarding what is good or bad information to consider.

Graphene will likely be big, its stronger than steel and super conductive which along with felxible solar cells could potentially allow people to have bullet proof-fabric-computer-shirts although that seems like it might not work out super well in the wash..which actually future clothes probably wont require..but I dont know much about that.

Lastly, this is pretty small but new light based computer circuits have been successfully created and if people can find a way to mass produce them they will be even faster then electrical circuits not to mention water proof.

Robot butlers will attend to our every whim. We will all have flying cars. Entire cities will be demolished just to replace every building with a futuristic alternative.

The robot butlers will become self aware. They will chase us around our shiny metal condos with percolators full of boiling coffee. When they have taken over we will be forced to mine salt from the sea.
