Never written before, how so you know if its any good

Discussion in 'Support & Feedback' started by Ryan Craig-douglas, Feb 15, 2018.

    Hi all.

I am unsure if this is the right place to post this but here goes.

I have never written a story before, in fact I have barly read a book barr a few in recent years. I have always had the urge to write and never really known why.

Well, I took the plunge and started to write, I am two chapters down and really enjoying it, but i am struggling to see if other people will find it compelling. I find it compelling and so does my other half but we are both also biased towards my own work.

What I am trying to ask. Is there somewhere i can post the first chapter of my story (1500 words or so)and ask if you guys find it compelling and interesting. I am not asking for free critiqueing or editting in any way. Just a simple, yes you are on the right road or a no, you are way off the mark.

Is this asking too much or could you guys help?

Any answer would be very appreciated.

Yes, there is such a place - the Workshop - but there are requirements. You need to post two critiques of your own, be a member for I think two weeks, and have a certain number of posts.

Alternatively, you could ask if somebody's willing to do it via PM.

    Great, thank you.

I shall go ahead and do what you have said.

Also, if anyone is willing to do this via PM. I would be very appreciative.

    Thanks

Hell, if it's only 1500 words, I suppose I could do it.

Go to "inbox" in the upper right corner of your screen, then start a new conversation.

I think reading and commenting on other people's work is a great way to develop your editing skills. If you realize you don't like it when a writer does this or that, you can start recognizing such flaws in your own work. Also, after you comment on someone's work, you could read what other people said about it. This is all a great way to get a sense of your own tastes and the general do's/don'ts of modern writing. Also, people are more likely to help you out with your work if you comment on theirs, or if they see you actively helping out other people. :)
