What's the proper way to punctualize "If I may" in dialogue? "If I may, . . ." "If I may – . . ." "If I may: . . ."
I thought as much, which was why it was my first option. But for whatever reason it looked odd when I was writing today.
If I may hijack this thread... Statement made about an overprotective friend... does this say he is overprotective? Or not? "He was nothing if not overprotective."
