Tears in Heaven, by Eric Clapton, especially if you know the story behind the song.

I think "Handlebars" by the Flobots is kind of sad, and it has a nice message.

Some songs by Panic! at the Disco are a little sad too...sometimes. When I'm in the right mood. And I look at it in a certain perspective. And I read sad stories before hearing it. Only then might they strike me as sad. XD

I'm surprised no one has mentioned "Iris" by The Goo Goo Dolls yet. Maybe it's not horribly sad; maybe it's just the point in my life that I associate it with.

And I'm usually not much for pop music...but goddamn, what a good song. That string section in the final chorus...Jesus Christ, it gives me goosebumps every time.

Personally, I find that song to be pretty cheesy and overdone, but I could see how, if you relate to it, it would mean a lot more for you.

Hallelujah's a good one for best of sad songs.

Another good one is Blue Oyster Cult's Dont Fear the Reaper - the lyrics really come off as the ultimate suicide-for-love song.

Oh, I have an infinite list; I always find that listening to the most tearful songs makes me feel so much better about my own situation.

Some of these may be repeats; I havent the patience to read through -all- five pages.

The following are songs that have either made me cry or yank at my heartstrings often. Song titles are italicized, and the ones you should download right now are in bold. =] Genres range from acoustic to metal to electronica to classical to pop to country...

-1000 Oceans, by Tori Amos (the steady tick-tock of the clock in the background, symbolizing that time will heal on is what really got to me.)
-Mother Superior, by Coheed and Cambria
    -Memories, by Within Temptation
-Wake Up, Open the Door, and Escape to the Sea, by Blaqk Audio (possibly -the- best heartache song on this earth)
-Boy and the Ghost, by Tarja Turunen
-How to Save a Life, by The Fray
    -Gollum's Song, by Emiliana Torrini
-Better Days, by the Goo Goo Dolls
    -Disarm, by Smashing Pumpkins
-Hurt, by Nine Inch Nails (or Johnny Cash, but NIN does a much better job)
-Heaven (9/11 Remix), by DJ Sammy
-Everybody Hurts [Unplugged], by The Corrs (this version is much more haunting than the original)
-How To Be Dead, by Snow Patrol
    -Bless the Child, by Nightwish
-You Would Have Loved This, by Tarja Turunen
-Mad World, by Gary Jules (or Tears for Fears; Jules' version is much more depressing)
    -Concrete Angel, by Martina McBride
    -Twilight, by Elliott Smith
    -Promises, by Adema
-Something I Can Never Have, by Nine Inch Nails
    -You're Beautiful, by James Blunt
-Just Hold Me, by Maria Mena
-In Joy and Sorrow, by H.I.M.
-The Drugs Dont Work, by Ben Harper
-SOS (Anything But Love), by Apocolyptica featuring Cristina Scabbia
-She's Falling Apart, by Lisa Loeb
