Hello everyone. I've just joined the site and it seems polite to introduce myself. The username Pepys seemed apt because I've written a daily journal my whole life, and I've also a passion for reading other people's published journals and letters. These humdrum scribblings, usually not intended for publication, crack open a window into the past and allow readers to savour the slow unfurling of history. We get a privileged glimpse into daily living, spiritual journeys, loves and hatreds, fantasies and dreams, foibles and fancies. These types of published writings also provide invaluable source material for writers like me who set some of their fiction in the past. Up to this point I've written purely for pleasure. I'm lazy and unfocused, and I've never had the discipline, drive or talent to make the leap from 'writer' to 'author'. I also have a grasshopper mind, so I'm always abandoning projects half way through. I'm easily bored; new ideas, plots and characters are always so much more alluring than one's stale old familiars. I'm getting a bit long in the tooth now, so it's time to knuckle down and actually write a whole full length novel. After decades of false starts, my sole aim and ambition as a writer is to be able to say 'I finally did it.' Of course that still won't make me an author, but I'll still be pretty damn proud of myself! Nice to meet you all, Pepys
