    Scrivener to Vellum

Discussion in 'Software' started by ISalem, Oct 14, 2020.

I have been using Scrivener for writing for many years. I was most admired by its fully functionality. Recently, I have discovered Vellum software. It looks beautiful software for writing. Now, thinking of moving from Scrivener to Vellum. Anyone has switch from Scrivener to Vellum?
    Any thoughts?!

vellum is for formatting, not writing in - i'd use both assuming you are self publishing... write in scrivener, output a word docx and import into vellum to format

In Scrivener for Mac, you can export directly to Vellum now.

how does that work when vellum only accepts .docx ?

theres not much to be gained by scriv exporting a vellum file, as you've still got to go through the vellum process to do anything with it

Of course scriv can export mobi and epub direct, but its formatting tools are basic compared to vellum

I’m not sure—I’ve never used it, I just noticed that the Export to Vellum option shows up when you compile.

Vellum is tempting. A friend has a collection of essays to publish, so I might have a reason to get it soon.

First, though, I think I'll see how far I can get with epub export from either Nisus or Mellel, with maybe a little hand-tuning in the epub css.

In the scrivener compile section, there is a drop down menu to compile to different formats. When you install vellum, Scrivener adds the compilation option to the Scrivener. To compile to vellum, click compile, select the vellum style, and export. :) Hope this helps.

ah okay - i assume that is only in scriv 3 on the mac... i use open source scriv on an ubuntu laptop... and go to the mac to format later (principally because the mac keyboard is nasty and my nice keyboard doesnt want to connect)

Actually, Scrivener 3 will export a Word document, .docx, that you then have to import into Vellum. That's what the Export to Vellum is for, it generates the Word document that Vellum has to have. I know this because I have been working on a set of ebooks for the last few weeks using both Scrivener and Vellum. I'll attach the link to the Scrivener to Vellum page at Literature and Latte. Hope that helps clear things up. Cheers!
