Hello, Was wondering if anyone would be interested in offering assignments, like short stories, to help me get started with writing more. I have difficulty giving myself goals in creative writing so am hoping being given tasks will help me to write on my own soon. My genre is literary fiction, so while I don't expect a potential mentor to have an English major, they should have familiarity with literature. General feedback is all I'm looking for in a critique -- no demands for polishing it for me on my end. If there's something I can offer in return, I'd be glad to, but I studied social sciences, yet might have something to offer about rhetoric and argumentation. Thanks for reading. --Brian
Try the Writing Prompts sub-forum. You might find what you want there. Another option is to write for our contests. Entries are open for two more weeks for the current short story theme, Into the Woods. And you have three weeks to get the next flash fiction entry in, and one week if you want to try poetry. Whether you enter or not, do stop by and vote for the entries that are up currently.
I'll certainly vote, but I need more structured goals. It was actually a mod who suggested I post here, based on the reason I'm making the request.
What do you mean by more structured goals? I've been using the contests to get better and they're helping a lot.
I would offer only one assignment, and that would be to devise a scenario from your own imagination and interests, and, execute it as a short story. Self-starting is a core skill, and the only way to improve it is to exercise it.
