Hello from not so sunny Bucharest

Discussion in 'New Member Introductions' started by Khaelmin, Dec 11, 2012.

    Hello everyone.

It's been two weeks and some change since I've joined, so I think this might be the right time to introduce myself. My name is Mihai (the Romanian equivalent of Michael), I'm 25 and I currently live in Bucharest. I've been a reader for my whole life, ever since I was four and my parents first handed me an anthology of Grimm's Fairy Tales. When I became too old for fairy tales, I've begun to avidly tear through my dad's not so modest Sci-fi library. Then, when my English skills developed some more, I rediscovered fairy tales in the guise of Fantasy and Horror. Right now I read just about anything, provided it's good.

Some years ago, I noticed this story beginning to crystallize in mind and shortly after that trying to escape. So I decided to put it into a sci-fi novel. Without success, so far, but now I think I see the problem. I've fallen into that trap that all wannabe writers invariably fall in. I tried to begin strong, thinking I could produce a quality novel on my first try. Boy, was I wrong.

So I decided to shelve the novel for now, instead focusing on writing a series of short stories set in the same universe. And that's why I joined your forum, to try and become a better writer. I hope your tips can help me finish the novel, and why not, I hope I can help others.

Hi Mihai, welcome to the forum. I joined for much the same reason (big ideas but not really getting anywhere). This forum has really helped me, hope it does you too. (From sunny but cold France)

Hello Mihai! Let me echo the sentiments above. This is a very warm and welcoming forum, in addition to being informative. Look forward to reading your work. :)

Second to the right, and straight on till morning.
Same here, I also love reading just about anything - any plot in the guise of any genre - and the one criterion that we share is that it has
to be good, too. I love it when you are being drawn in the story, when you cannot get out until it's done. I love this duality, it's like the natural
world's order; exhaustion and then rest. Work and then leisure time. So, you read and you go on until you're at the last page and you go like woah.

    Welcome to Writing Forums, Mihai!

I hope you find what you're looking for here, whatever your interests in writing.

This forum aims to provide the best workshopping resources on the internet, and to that end we have a few rules which you should familiarise yourself with before you get stuck in. The main section of the site is the Writing Workshop, where members can post their writing in order to receive critique of their work.

However, before we allow members to post their work, they must have met some basic requirements. Firstly, you must have been a member for fourteen days, and have made twenty posts on the forum overall (please note, posts in Word Games do not count towards this). This is so that members, when they post their work, have familiarised themselves with the forums and contributed to them (as well as hopefully learned something for themselves). Secondly, members must provide two constructive reviews of other people's work for each piece of their own that they wish to post. This is because we believe that the focus of workshopping should be equally upon giving reviews as receiving them, as they allow a writer to practice and improve their editing skills, which they can then apply to their own writing.

Beyond the Writing Workshop, you will find that we have extensive forums for discussion of aspects of writing, as well as a community area for general discussion. We also run periodic short story and poetry contests, which are good for challenging yourself and expanding your skills.

If you have any questions or problems, then the moderators (myself, Cogito, Lemex and Dante Dases) should be your first port of call. Any technical problems with the site itself should be directed to Daniel, the site administrator and owner. I would recommend you have a look over the rules so that you know what to expect, and what is expected. But aside from that, I hope you enjoy your time here.

Thanks for the warm welcome guys. :)

As for a sample of my writing, you can check the most recent Short Story Contest 125. I've posted an entry there.
