    Short Story Submission Confusion

Discussion in 'Traditional Publishing' started by J.T. Woody, May 12, 2022.

I'd like to submit to a contest and am putting together my entry. However, it asks for "Entry forms must have the word/line/page count listed where requested."

    Does this mean:
    • "1500-page1" ("line" to mean the dash)
    • 1500-5pages"
    • Or literally the word count, LINE COUNT, and page number??

I've never encountered "line" on a submission form before.

You can find your line count in files, properties and then statistics tab at least on openoffice.

Hope I understood your question correctly.

    EDIT:
The reason they're asking for a line count, I would presume, is to see how much dialogue there may be. Maybe?

I've never seen anyone ask for anything other than word count. I mean, ever. I feel that they were just being inclusive, saying to list the length in whatever form it's asked. But it's only ever asked in word count, so I would just enter that.

not a pro, yet very curious
Is this referring to short story submissions only? Maybe it lists the requirements for all formats, including poetry where a line count could matter . . . ?

    I don't know, I am just guessing.

In Word, using the old menu it's under Tools > Word Count. The pop-up lists:
    • Pages
    • Words
    • Characters (no spaces)
    • Characters (with spaces)
    • Paragraphs
    • Lines
