So many Trek epsisodes are wonderfully thought-provoking. Because of this I can shamelessly work them into everyday conversation. That's the beauty of the series: like a great novel it seeps into other areas of your life. Star Wars is good fiction, but Star Trek is great fiction.
Star Trek for me. Why? a) It's marginally (and it's a whoppingly fine margin) more realistic. b) It has a more intriguing and diverse universe and engagement. Not everything is about the epic mythical struggle between epic mythical protagonists and antagonists of demigod and godlike stature. Star Trek as both larger than Star Wars and at the same time much, much more human.
There's a theory that states you can tell whether a person was under or over the age of ten when they saw Return of the Jedi by whether they love or hate the Ewoks. I don't know if that's true, but I was born in 1979 and literally grew up watching the original trilogy. I love everything about them. My first memory of the series was A New Hope (back when they still just called Ep. IV "Star Wars") at my grandparents' house at Thanksgiving. While the grownups did grownup things, I was transfixed by the television. I was out of high school when I saw the prequels in the theater. I was so stoked to see new material that I didn't even notice how annoying Phantom was until my second viewing. They got pretty good by the third, glaring flaws notwithstanding. The books were better though. Even though the scripts came first, it's still like reading a great book from which a mediocre movie was made. Now I watch all ten with my four-year-old. He loves all of them as much as I did the originals, and suddenly Jar Jar doesn't bug me anymore. It's like watching Sesame Street with him when he was younger. Elmo annoyed the crap out of me before I saw him through a toddler's eyes. I'm waiting for him to turn five before we dive into Clone Wars and Rebels. I can't wait. Did you know they're doing a finale season of SWtCW next year!? I might be more excited about that than I am Episode IX. I have mixed feelings about the new films. When Disney declared ninety-five percent of Star Wars material non-canon, I was angrier than I probably should have been about something like that. Accordingly, I can't bring myself to care enough to hate what other people hate about the new stuff. They're fun. I like the characters. TFA was better than TLJ. Rebel One is superfluous, but good. That's about it. Oh, and the guy in Solo looks more like Dennis Quaid than Harrison Ford, and I couldn't get that out of my head though the very last scene. I'm way more invested in the MCU these days.
I think the Ewoks are far more terrifying than people give them credit for. And not just because they originally couldn't blink, either.
Star Wars big span of galaxies, aliens, space ships, tactical maneuvers, and plot factors assure there is something to satisfy many types of lovers. Star Trek is more complex. There are many cultures with many special political systems. Some cultures are more spiritual than others.
Go back to prison, you made me cry again. Star Wars, I like Star Wars if you like. I never wish I pressed the buttons.
"Qui-Gon is the best federation captain. I love when he goes through the stargates". You now have the best sentence for annoying people who like both franchises, while also knowing about star gate.
Aww, shucks, they don't want me anymore. They keep saying I'm a 'bad influence' on everyone there before paroling me against my will.
No mistake about it; Enterprise D would obliterate the Deathstar, so long as it avoided the planet killing laser.
Babylon 5 for me. Awesome story. Firefly/Serenity - plucky little show with big balls. "Jaws was never my thing and I don't like Star Wars." - Queen
You mean the ship that can't seem to fire at more than two things at once could stand up to a space station 160 km in diameter, has somewhere around 20,000 cannons of different varieties and approximately 2000 support fighters? I'm not saying it couldn't hit a weak spot, but I doubt it would fit in that trench.
I wouldn't think the Enterprise would have to engage in battle when they would probably just beam a photon torpedo into the Deathstar's core and detonate it. But, if they did do battle, i do have to admit that the Enterprise would be vastly outgunned.
BSG for the win! Combining the battles of Midway and Trafalgar all in one scene, ships of the line duking it out like ships of the line did when that meant something, little fighters swarming around everything, banked and flip turns, depending on the season. Say what you want, but every time a battlestar rammed something it was on purpose, unlike the Empire, whose bridge crews were even more useless than those of the current US Navy.
