Is putting questions down in my story fine or should I avoid it? I tried to find ways to avoid asking questions as I don't see it done often (if at all) in novels, but sometimes I can't think of anything that still sounds good. I had a sentence for example that went: "Raddeus had always been kind to them, had they done something to anger him?" Rephrasing to avoid the question never came off as good. The problem is I also find my character asking himself (this is in third person personal) many questions, is this something to be avoided/minimized or is there no harm in it?
You mention 3rd person personal, so there is no reason there could not be a question, assuming the question is attributable to someone "on set" as either dialogue or internal thought. That aside, you have a comma splice. That comma should be either a full stop (period) or in this case a semicolon is perfectly valid given the close tie of ideation between the two sentences.
I think it's fine if the character is pondering something for himself, asking questions that way. Like wreybies said it's internal dialogue.
Heheh, thanks, I had a feeling that sentence sounded off. Thanks guys, I'll try and reduce the instances of questions in my novel without giving them up entirely. I do see authors use them from time to time but wasn't sure how they'd appear to any readers.
