Novel Asking rhetorical questions in the book

Discussion in 'Genre Discussions' started by CMastah, Mar 16, 2016.

Is putting questions down in my story fine or should I avoid it?

I tried to find ways to avoid asking questions as I don't see it done often (if at all) in novels, but sometimes I can't think of anything that still sounds good.

I had a sentence for example that went:

"Raddeus had always been kind to them, had they done something to anger him?"

Rephrasing to avoid the question never came off as good. The problem is I also find my character asking himself (this is in third person personal) many questions, is this something to be avoided/minimized or is there no harm in it?

You mention 3rd person personal, so there is no reason there could not be a question, assuming the question is attributable to someone "on set" as either dialogue or internal thought.

That aside, you have a comma splice. That comma should be either a full stop (period) or in this case a semicolon is perfectly valid given the close tie of ideation between the two sentences.

I think it's fine if the character is pondering something for himself, asking questions that way. Like wreybies said it's internal dialogue.

Just don't do it too often, it gets wearing when done every other sentence ;)

It's fine. Don't overdo it too much, and, yes, comma splice.

I think I was in a coma space during English classes. :)

Heheh, thanks, I had a feeling that sentence sounded off.

Thanks guys, I'll try and reduce the instances of questions in my novel without giving them up entirely. I do see authors use them from time to time but wasn't sure how they'd appear to any readers.
