    The Opening Chapter Game

Discussion in 'Word games' started by OurJud, Jul 28, 2016.

Okay, this is how it works. I'll post the first sentence - and first sentence only - from a well-known novel. The first to correctly identify the title of the book gets to post the next.

    Rules:
    • In that guesses are unlikely this is essentially a race. Therefore the answerer does not have to wait for confirmation that they are correct, except in rare cases where they're uncertain. If they are awaiting confirmation, anyone may do this if they're sure of the answer, in order to get the ball rolling again.

    • Strictly no obscure, unheard-of novels may be used. The novel in question must be one that practically everyone knows of.

    • Only the very first sentence should be posted

Okay, I'll kick off with an easy one:

It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen.
