Help on punctuation in a quotation

Discussion in 'Word Mechanics' started by katica, Jul 21, 2011.

    "How are you?" she asked.

    How are you," she asked.

Which is the correct way to punctuate in this situation? I was doing it the second way and my boyfriend was proofreading my work and said its the first way. I believe that it's entire possible that its that way, but want to make sure I do it right, so I decided to ask all of you.

If the only thing she says is "How are you" then yes, the first is correct, being:

    "How are you?" she said

    But if it's something like

"How are you," she said, "Is that wound finally healed?"

Being that both the sentences can be joined with a comma if their both questions. I'm pretty sure that's write, but I'm not a genius so if anyone finds fault with that let me know.

    The first way.

Sorry, seelifein69. as written that would be a run on sentence (comma splice) without a question mark:

Also, a continuation will not begin with a capitalized word.
