I actually worked with two of them. One of the guys was dating a girl from work, and she decided to get married and told him he was going to quit messing around... and not long before her wedding she disappeared. It was even on Unsolved Mysteries. http://unsolvedmysteries.wikia.com/wiki/Niqui_McCown

Well a looooong time later it started coming to light that Tommy Swint and the guy on the SRT team Tim Priest, were running around together and supposedly picking up prostitutes and killing them. Well when they went to question Swint about it all he ran to Alabama and he eventually killed himself. http://www.wtvm.com/story/11935223/new-details-in-tommy-swints-death

Well his running partner, Tim Priest, the Black guy in the very center of the picture, his wife was found with a cinder block tied around her feet at the bottom of their family pool. "Supposedly" she had written a suicide letter, but most people that know about the situation think she found out about what Priest and Swint had done so they killed her. Priest then ran off to Nevada, and he ended up killing himself.

I'd kill for that attention. (Well, maybe not kill.) My last remaining cat Nezumi sits some distance away staring at me with that, why the hell are you looking at me glare. I can make encouraging sounds, pat my thighs, offer my arms for her to jump into. (My now deceased elder cat loved that.) Nothing. I can wave a bag of treats around for just as long as it takes her to gobble up a few, then she goes back to the staring. I take a chance and hunker down beside her and attempt to scratch behind her ears. The look changes somewhat. Now she's saying. Ahem... why are you doing that? Don't do that! Stop touching me! If I don't do what she says/glares, next thing I know, I'll be in Accident and Emergency having my forearms and eyelids stitched.

    Consider yourself bloody lucky!!!!! ;)

Finally spring has arrived, and I got to enjoy it on horseback yesterday. :-D Me and my friend went on a 2-hour hack on Icelandic horses (those of you who don't know, they have two special gaits in addition to the standard walk, trot and canter, which makes riding them something of an experience), and it was so much fun. Icelandic horses are pony size, but they're extremely sturdy and can carry a grown man. And they are super cute to boot!

So I thought I'd share some of these pics with you guys, taken one deceptively sunny evening in Helsinki. I learned a few cool things about some of the famous places and sights here. :)

This cathedral, the Uspenski Cathedral by the sea, hides a horror story of its Russian architect in his black robes still walking in the shadows, muttering to himself, lamenting the fact he died before the cathedral was finished. It's a pretty imposing building. I find Orthodox churches kind of unsettling, for some reason.
    Uspenski3.jpg

I took a picture of the side of this statue cos it hides this weird face. When you look at it upside down, it's actually a face of a man with a bushy mustache and what look like horns, with an upside-down pentagram on his head. This is kind of creepy because the statue itself is of our national author Elias Lönnrot and two characters from our national epic, Kalevala. They have nothing to do with religious or Satanic imagery.

This "castle" is on a street where people tell a story of Turkish woman who used to live there. She got hit by a tram and lost her leg. According to the urban legend, she can still be seen dragging her wooden leg up and down the street. Creepy.
    castle edited1.jpg

Now I may be smiling here, but I'm actually squatting in a group gaol, one of the most awful places in Katajanokka prison in Helsinki city center. It's cramped, dark, you can't stand up s and the floor is uneven and jagged to keep prisoners from getting any rest. Needless to say, many of them died there. The urban legend goes, you can see faces flash in the dark and hear thumps and clanks in the dark.
    the cave1_edited1.jpg

Needless to say, for an aspiring writer, this kind of "alternative" history is super interesting 'cause you can get ideas for stories. :D I found the prison particularly unsettling. It was so small and cramped everywhere, even the corridors. Now I don't believe in ghosts, but if I did, I don't think I'd want to spend a night there.

Can't take credit for this. My mate snapped it when out and about in his taxi. I thought it was rather fitting given the amount of high profile elections going on of late. Ours is tomorrow, I think, (really need to check) and his caption pretty much summed up my feelings on the subject:

'So which clown should I vote for?'

Those are so cool and I love ghost stories. My son and I stayed a couple times in the haunted tower room at the Manresa Castle. He remembers setting up his Ghostbuster toys there. We both remember the night we heard stomping overhead coming from the locked attic.

I took two guest books (with permission) from our room and another claimed haunted room down to the local Kinko's Copies and made xeroxes of them before returning them to the rooms. They are full of guests' accounts of seeing or not seeing strange happenings. So much fun.
