If you ever want to try film photography, the black and white film a lot of, if not most newspaper photographers used at that time is still available. It's called Kodak Tri-X 400. Photojournalists liked it because it wasn't fussy about lighting conditions and the grain of the images worked well with existing newspaper printing technology. (Vintage photography geek here...) I use it because I like the look of it too.
I had black lipstick at one point. My mum hated it! I have dabbled in the gothic in the past. Had a gothic dress for a few years, which I wore for my birthday one year, and painted my nails black. I've had DMs in the past, which I wore through in secondary school, and thanks to @Iain Aschendale 's post on another thread, I now have to get some more-this time in green! I miss the funky clothes I used to have in my college/secondary school years. Really wish I'd taken some pictures of myself in that stuff.
What's all this about Docs? What's so great and desirable about them? I keep hearing about them, and it seems like there's some kind of triumph of sheer marketing going on here.
They're good boots, pricey, de rigeur for a certain set of youth to which I used to belong. By having blue suede, I subvert the professional trope and the punk one at the same time
For me, my appearance is an extension of my darkly-romantic, you might call it Gothic, soul. I didn't know how to describe my inner life when I was a kid, but I remember certain powerfully epic and beautiful art-forms... thunderstorms especially... breaking through my shell and pulling out something so passionate that it even stunned me to encounter what hides in my depths. In my later years with all the personality tests online, I learned that I am an INFP on the MBTI and a Type 4 on the Enneagram, which helped me see that intense part of myself in a new light; I've always been darkly-inclined and in a state of being half-dormant until something rouses me and I come out to play.
All I know is that you invited me in.... now. It's to late for you, but you may be able to warn some of your friends and loved ones.
Fraid so, let me know when you start to get sleepy. That means it'll be over soon. Till then we can play.
Saw this book at Kinokuniya (Japanese bookstore) and a certain member came to mind...... Spoiler: Big big big big
Yup, right between 38th and 39th on sixth avenue, if my shoddy memory is to be trusted. Never heard of Junkudo though. Need to look them up.
Similar large bookstore chain that has (had, they shrunk it) a pretty decent English-language section.
I bet Kinokuniya beat Junkudo to NYC. They're the only store that I know of that sells Japanese/English books, arts and crafts, blah blah blah. I'll have to give Junkudo a visit when I finally make it to Shibuya.
