    The Beginning

Discussion in 'New Member Introductions' started by Mikee, Sep 4, 2008.

    Hello everyone.

My name is Michael Kocha. I haven't seen much of the site yet, though I've already read quite a bit in the publishing section. I've been writing as long as I can remember, to be honest, though I've never had the drive or the ambition to stick to any longer projects, which subjects me to prose and lyrics, mostly.

I'm mostly looking to fix my flaws in writing, or at least tame them so they can be better used instead of sundering my imagination. I haven't heard many critiques on my writing, so I'm also interested to hearing the darker side of my abilities. The most powerful heroes have the worst weakness'.

I have a very free style about my writing. Using many... Short. Dramatic. Sentences to show the mood of the character. I also tend to use many incomplete and incorrect sentences when writing in first person, to allow the reader to feel more comfortable with the character, so they might connect better.

My passion is writing. I hope to someday be a successful published author, creative writing/English teacher on a high school level (inspiring kids to put down the remote and pick up a pen) and to eventually own my own game development company, designing and writing the plots for massively multiplayer online video games. I'm a big fan of choose your own adventure games because it allows the player to be creative - my favorite word.

My hopes are high and my eagerness to learn and eventually teach is higher. I'm excited to get to know all of you and read your work.

    Farewell,
    Michael/Mikee

Hi, I'm new as well! :)
I think having high hopes is the only way to actually get what you want in life, so it sounds to me like you definitely will accomplish your future goals. They sound like very rewarding ones!
I 'hope' the best for you. But alas, I shall never give up the remote! :(

Hello Michael, Welcome to the Writing Forums.

Posting your own work should not be the very first thing you do here. It is really worthwhile to see what other people have done to improve their writing, and see if some of it applies to your writing as well. That is part of why we require members to review other members' work before posting their own for review. On the other hand, there are no restrictions, other than content and copyright rules, on showcasing your work in your member blog.

If you haven't explored the site yet, you should probably do so soon. Newcomers often gravitate to the Lounge, the Word Games, or the Review Room, but there is much more to be discovered if you poke in the corners. Remember to check out our FAQ as well, and be sure to read through the forum rules, too, to avoid any misunderstandings or hurt feelings. Respect for one another is our principal mandate.

As for the Review Room, new joiners often wonder why we do things a bit differently on this site than on other writing sites. We emphasize reviewing as a critical writing skill. Training your eye by reviewing other people's work helps you improve your own writing even before you present it for others to see. Therefore, we ask members to review other people's writing before posting work of their own. The Review Room forums on this site, therefore, are true workshops, not just a bulletin board for displaying your work (and on that note, please only post each item for review in one Review Room forum). See this post, Why Write Reviews Before Posting My Work? for more information.

And while you're looking around, don't forget to check out our Weekly Short Story Contest and Weekly Poetry Contest. They actually run more than one week apiece, but any member may enter, and all members are urged to vote for their favorites.

Enjoy your stay here, and have fun!
