"The Gale at Quiet Cove" is finally published!

Discussion in 'Success Stories' started by X Equestris, Apr 14, 2020.

My heroic fantasy novelette "The Gale at Quiet Cove" is now published as part of Unreal: An Anthology of Speculative Fiction, which officially bumps my total number of published short fiction pieces into the double digits!

    https://www.amazon.com/Unreal-Anthology-Speculative-Fiction-1-ebook/dp/B08632MBNX

    A little teaser:

After a month on the road hunting monsters and magic, Knight-Lieutenant Arlise Dun just wants a hot bath and a decent meal. Not conversation with some selkie at Quiet Cove. But when Earc Mac Toghda tells her about the arcane storm plaguing his people, she vows to discover who--or what--is behind it. Faced with wild magic, an unruly subordinate, and her own self-loathing, Arlise must battle monsters real and imagined to unravel the mystery of the gale at Quiet Cove.

After three really close rejections (and plenty form rejections) and an Honorable Mention from the Writers of the Future Contest, I'm really glad this story found a home.

Oh, I forgot to mention that there will eventually be a paperback version of the anthology as well. However, the quarantines due to this ongoing pandemic mean it probably won't get published until June at the earliest.

Congratulations! Another published piece and entering the double digits for short stories is a big accomplishment. Man, I would love to be able to say the same. Good for you!!! Keep it up and keep writing. It's obviously your calling. :)

I did a look inside and I liked the tension right away.
If the beast was behind me and the old woman told me to ‘Go’ I’d be gone with a squeak.
    Congrats

Pretty sure that particular story isn't mine, but I'm glad to hear positive things about the others. It's always nice to be published in good company.

Ah, yeah, that's the first story in the anthology. Mine is way further along, so I doubt it shows up with the "Look Inside" feature.

To add onto this point, the publisher told me last week that the paperback edition will be published this month, though there's not a specific release date yet. Fingers crossed they can avoid further schedule slippage.

Just bought my copy of the anthology on Kindle Got a lot of other reading piled up, including an extensive beta-read that I'm doing at the moment ...but it's nice to have this to look forward to. Well done, @X Equestris .

    Congratulations to you.
Had a question on the story though. Why does the knight agree to help the 'selkie'?

Arlise is with the Order of Watchers, a military-religious order dedicated to safeguarding the world from monsters, dangerous magic, and abusive magic users. A magical storm raging for months would be worrisome on its own, but it's powerful enough to make the cove too dangerous for the selkies to hunt in or the local fisherfolk to sail through. So a combination of duty and empathy are why she gets involved. An element of her past plays a role as well, but I don't want to spoil anything further.

Oh alright, cool. Sounds like something I'd enjoy. Real picky about fantasy type stories. They either fall face first onto the cliche ridden dirt floor or can be pretty exciting worlds to dive into. You said it's a novellete? That's about 20k or something words correct?

Official SFWA guidelines have novelettes run between 7500 and 17500 words. This one sits around 8650 or so.

Okay. Being as that sort of fiction is very hit or miss I don't think I'd take a chance with an anthology. Perhaps if you published it as a stand alone.

I might do that once I'm sure there aren't any exclusivity issues. Alternatively, I might include it in a collection of other stories starring Arlise. They make up just over half my published works, after all.

I forgot to update this thread earlier, but the paperback version has been put a while now:

Also, I just did an author interview (my first ever) with the publisher today. Once that's online, I'll post a link here.
