Man, I know I've read some Gene Wolfe, the name was instantly familiar to me, but I'll be damned if I can figure out which story or book.
Celtics great, John Havlicek, dead at 79. We lost a great one in the Boston Sports pantheon. Rest in peace, brother. And thank you.
Director John Singleton (Boyz n the Hood) has died at age 51. He'd been in a coma after suffering a major stroke. R.I.P. #2. Edited movie title per Moose's spelling correction. Thanks, Moose! #1 (Edited spelling of movie title--and it still doesn't look right.)
Its generally written with no apostrophe "Boyz n the Hood" Worrying - that's only 5 years older than me
He's the second celebrity in just a couple of months to die of a major stroke in his early 50's. (Luke Perry most recently.) Both while prepping major projects. Reminder: Get your BP checked, people! High blood pressure is "the silent killer" and while it's true there are risk factors, it can sneak up on you at any age, without warning, despite never having had it previously, or even if you've had a long history of low blood pressure. Also, not everyone gets headaches from high BP, and not having any symptoms is extremely common.
mines actually a tad lower than it should be... doc says nothing to worry about its worrying shit though two of my grand parents died of strokes and another from a heart attack (the fourth was shot in the line of duty while serving with the Met... i probably don't need to worry about that)
The good thing is, however scary, you know your family history and you and your doc can keep an eye on it. Because it certainly can sneak up on you without warning. Mine's been unstable for about ten years, as part of having reactivated mono, but until two years ago it trended on the low side, and if I stood up too quickly I'd feel faint from the drop, which sounds scary but is "normal" with reactivated mono. So imagine my surprise when I went for a routine doc visit and it was *checks app on phone* 205/110 That's not a typo. Two hundred five over one ten. It was so firmly in the stroke zone, the doc gave me an immediate dose of meds and hooked me up to monitors and brought in a crash cart and started asking me things like, "Is your face hurting?" "Are your limbs tingling?" "Are you dizzy?" "Count to ten for me?" And I felt perfectly fine and had no idea. "Silent killer", most definitely. After experiementing with meds and dosages, I do two meds daily, and my average is now 126/67. So, yeah...get checked regularly, people.
Shot in the line of duty while serving with the Metropolitan Opera? Must have been really butchering Verdi. I think it's more likely that you meant the Mets. They're a pretty hapless baseball team and it's only a matter of time before they're fans have had quite enough.
