The rotating door handle thing on vault doors

Discussion in 'Word Mechanics' started by ZeroG564, May 31, 2020.

Hello! I'm in the middle of a first draft for something which, because it's a first draft, I'm not worrying about the quality of the writing now, but I am concerned with getting down the vision in my head. I would like to at least make sure the first draft fully and accurately expresses what I want out of this story.

In one scene, a character is trying to blow up one of those giant vault doors like you see in submarines or the giant nuclear fallout shelters in science fiction (the Fallout game series, etc.). But I'm sure there's a separate word to describe that rotating door handle thing, right? Like the one on the hatch in the TV show LOST. But for the life of me, I can't figure out what it is!

Anybody have any idea what the name is for that?

Anyway, thanks for your help. Looking forward to getting to know everyone.

Spindle (correctly) and sometimes vault wheel (informal).

    Google "bank vault spindle".
