I'm creating a fictitious German town for my novel to be set, I have a name, which is awful, and I want some ideas for what to call it. Can anyone help?
do you need the name to convey the character of the town/townspeople?... if not, just pull up a google map of germany and pick a name, any name... you can change it a tad to avoid angering the real place's inhabitants, if you think that necessary... as in: leipzig/zeipzig koblenz/doblenz eisenach/weisenach
Find a word in German you like, then find a word that describes a location castle/meadow/lake/mine etc. in German and combine the 2 to 1 word.
Thanks guys, this has helped. I started by taking a German place name and changing it a little; at first it was Kuhr, but I realised I hated it. It's currently Zweiberg, but I'm not sure about that either!
I'd choose Feldkirchen if what you're thinking of is a small rural town. It translates to something like "church on the field" and is quite common in Germany as well as in Austria.
