Is there a title for people who spread the words or commands of the king/emperor or whatever before there was a printing press or whatever? Like someone has to have been traveling around telling towns and villages that hey, we're at war for x and y reasons and we need conscripts to fight for us or whatever. Or basically anyone whose task is to inform the ppl of the king's will or thoughts. I can imagine some villagers not even being aware they belong to a certain kingdom.
Town cryer. Or is it Town Crier? In which case, if that job is still going, I would love to apply; I've got plenty of experience.
If it's a local fellow who receives news from elsewhere and keeps announcing it, you have a town crier. If it's a fellow dispatched by the ruler to travel a vast distance and announce something, you've a royal/imperial herald. If the fellow's instructed to carry a message to somewhere in the land, but also to carry any answer back as well, and is regularly employed like this, then they are a courier or messenger.
If you are looking at conscription then I imagine small bands of soldiers would have gone with an officer to round them up.
Herald is a typical one, and justified, as heralds were supposed to keep track and recognize the entirety of kingdom's heraldry. They are also lot more generalist than messangers, who would be basically bringing written messages.
