I really want to watch Westworld, but I'm afraid I've read so much hype on it that it won't live up to my expectations...
Not trying to add to the hype, but.. It will definitely live up to any expectations you have because it's amazing.
I'm personally not into TV shows like anyone else, but I have a few favorites, such as Friends, Futurama, Bob's Burgers, (old) CSI, crime and paranormal documentary shows. Also, after slacking and slacking, I recently started AND got done watching Orange Is The New Black. Think it was the first recent show I watched, not counting Game Of Thrones, because I gave up on that show in the middle of the third season.
Has anyone seen a TV show called The Night Of? My sister bought it on blu ray a few weeks ago and we haven't had the chance to watch it yet.
Just ordered the first season of La Femme Nikita on DVD from some obscure DVD shop in Holland . That show is so hard to find, but it's also damn good! One of those hidden gems, with the amazing Peta Wilson as Nikita. I tried to watch the remake, but I just couldn't get into it, the new Nikita and Michael lack the quirkiness and character of the first TV adaptation's Nikita & Michael. Though I guess if you watched Nikita first, before ever seeing LFN or the original movie, one would prefer that because its production value is better.
So the first episode I saw of Black Mirror was "The Entire History of You", and I thought the drama was entirely contrived and tedious, and the scenario poorly executed. It put me right off the show. (I've since learned that this is the only episode not written by Charlie Brooker, which is interesting.) I only just gave it another try and got to see the episode "San Junipero" at a friend's who has Netflix, and oh my god was it actually great speculative fiction. I caught all of the feels and came out thinking "this is practically better than Twilight Zone". You know that feeling when you realise a show isn't nearly as terrible as you thought it was, that it seriously rivals one of your favourite shows of all time, and you're taunted by the knowledge of all that you're missing? I'm not a big TV watcher. My TV's not plugged in, I don't have access to anything other than what my local networks stream online, I don't have a whole lot of spare time to watch stuff anyway, and dammit, it helps me if I can maintain the illusion that I'm not missing out on anything. Just thinking about it now. Gragh!
When I first saw it (years ago on C4), I couldn't understand what all the fuss was about. I thought it slapped me around the face with its dystopian constructs; it needed more subtlety. I enjoy it now, but it is still hit and miss- the good episodes are some of the best TV I have watched, but the bad ones are pretty bad.
Legion anyone? Absolutely fantastic series! Be prepared for weird, confusing and a bit of horror though. Not neccessarily a general market thing.
Ah, not much into comic books myself, I'll probably take a pass. I did like the first season of "Powers" though. That's why they canceled it after the second season...
It's not like a normal comic book story. It's one of the most distinct. On that note I'd also recommend the Jessica Jones series, fantastic portrait of someone who's not even sure if they want to be a hero. Both series feature quite human and flawed protagonists who mostly just want to live their lives.
So, the other day a shitty pawnshop at the train station put out a free box of DVDs that weren't selling. I almost missed my train just to take a look-see, and nabbed Season 3 of Boston Legal. Had to clean the disks, but they seem to play fine. It's just what I needed in my life right now. 24 episodes of cheesy, contrived, completely indulgent Spader/Shatner goodness. I really needed to wind down this weekend and getting to watch this again is like a warm embrace. Almost worth going through all of life's crap, just to make simple moments like this so satisfying.
Twenty years ago, all the humour evaporated away from the Simpsons. Ten years ago offence with purpose descended into offence for the sake of offence in Family Guy (and endless lazy cutaways)... I awaited my replacement and I found it in Rick and Morty. Why do I mention it now at the start of the third season? Because the third season opener was one of the most genius pieces of television I have ever watched... just brilliant.
Sorry, no. Cannot deal with comic books, never could. I made an exception for The White Donkey, but that was a very rare and special thing.
