So I can't seem to decide what a could font to use for texting would be. How should I write out a text in the novel I'm writing, I had my mom read it and she said the way I did it made no sense. A few tips would be appreciated, thank you. Courtney
I've used italics and brackets. I think that ideally the surrounding text should make it clear what's going on without relying on typographical trickery. What have you used before that allegedly made no sense?
I used Courier New and I would put Name of Person Texting: Then whatever the person would say so for example. Jack: Hey Jill let's go up the hill today Jill: Ok Jack sounds good!
Depending on the media, you could consider formatting options as well. align left for one texter, align right for the other
That seems like it would make sense to me, but it's worth mentioning that if your goal is to publish traditionally then font shenanigans aren't going to fly. A publisher typically wants everything in the manuscript to be in the same font. You could potentially still use the general format you've got, though - just skip the font change.
Thanks guys for the tips, I like what @KevinMcCormack said about the align left for one and align right for the other that seems like it'd be easier for me to do. Thanks a million, Courtney
That's how I've always done it. I figure the publisher will have their own house-style rules for formatting texts, so all I need to do is make it clear what's happening and let them sort out the formatting later.
